Danny demonstrates a natural sense of curiosity that drives the plot forward as he starts to discover the past about his parents and his mysterious missing sister, This curiosity about his parent's past is his primary motivation for most of the book. Later in the book, Danny finds out his missing sister was actually adopted and his parents are wanted for arrest after trying to steal her, this forces Danny to make an important choice, either he stays and helps his parents with healing the past and help them financially, or go on with his life and go to college. The theme that this moral dilemma serves is you can't run from the past forever it will eventually catch up to you. This is because as much as his parents try and run from the past it always comes back to bite them. Ultimately his parents make the choice for him forcing him to go to college and leaving his life without a trace.

The social setting is what drives Danny's curiosity to find out what happened to his parents in the past. This way the writer can make a lot of story behind the parents and where they came from and who they were before Danny was born. The setting starts to change as the past starts to catch up to the parents, for example, “you lost your job, why were u fired!!, what are we gonna do now, my mom screamed at the top of her lungs.”. This single event is what changes the setting alone, not only the economic setting but it also changes the social setting of the book. This is shown how dannys father loses his job and danny having to move schools because of it. The book illustrates the consequences of those who choose to run away from the past rather than face it. The book also talks about how concealing the truth only hurts relationships between people, but also delays the inevitable. This is shown how they try and hide what happened to his sister for all these years but danny just finds out on his own. The truthwould hurt alot less if they were just honest and told the truth in the first place.
