Fall of Bastille

Fear rose above Paris as rumors flew around creating a panic. Many thought that Louis was planning an attack on his own people. Others believed as if another country (mainly Austria) was planning to attack Paris. No matter what people thought, they all had the same reaction. Gear up. The mobs raging around the town had found a lot of supplies but they were missing one thing. Gunpowder. These mobs knew exactly where to get it, The Bastille. The Bastille was a symbol of the Old Regime, it was a prison where many 3rd estate citizens were tortured. The Mobs stormed in and took over, they took all the gunpowder and killed the warden and many guards. As a symbol of the Revolution they held their heads on stakes as they walked around town and they also tore The Bastille down. The Fall of Bastille was a huge success for The Revolution.

On June 17th 1789 the 3rd estate delegates voted to be established as the National Assembly which was the name of the 3rd estate. This idea was brought up from a spokesman of the 3rd estate known as, Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyes. The 3rd estate had 97% of the population yet their votes were silenced to just one. On June 20th the delegates of the 3rd estate were completely locked out of their conference room as a sign from the 1st and 2nd estate that they are the minority. Instead of giving up, the group broke down the doors to a tennis court. They vowed to stay there until a new constitution was drawn up. These are the events of the infamous Tennis Court Oath.

On the Outskirts (Countryside) of Paris the townspeople started to hear rumors. As we all know, once rumors are heard, rumors are spread. The rumors spread from town to town. The rumors were that the nobles were hiring outlaws that were going to hurt the peasants and scare them into being good citizens. Instead of hiding and letting the nobles win, the peasants got pitch forks and other supplies and attacked the nobles. When they attacked, they burned the nobles stuff along with papers saying they had to pay dues. Sometimes they would just burn the whole house down leaving the nobles with nothing. Ultimately this showed that the people would not back down.

Meeting of the Estates General

Louis XVI was terrible with money management much like his grandfather Louis XV. He pushed his problems aside and decided not to deal with them until they were knocking on his front door. To fix the huge financial problem in France, Louis tried to get the nobles to pay taxes. The nobles obviously hated this idea because they have never had to pay taxes and they did not want to pay them now over something that was not their fault. To get this new tax approved he was forced to call a meeting of the estates general that would be held on May 5th 1789. One of these meetings hadn't been called in 175 years! These meetings are when representatives form all three estates meet together to vote on something. each estate has 1 vote even though the third estate holds 97% of the population.

At around the same time as The Great Fear, the cost of bread skyrocketed. This was leaving families to starve because they could barely afford bread before the price went up. Women in Paris were fed up and decided to take action. Th e women marched together to Versailles with weapons. They wanted the national assembly to give them bread, but then the march turned even more violent. They charged the palace with deadly intentions. They almost got to the queen before she escaped to Louis. Louis then signed the Constitution and moved to Paris along with the rest of the royal family. They would never return to Versailles.

Louis was scared as his days as a king were soon going to come to and end. Anyone who was against the Revolution was in great danger and the king was told that he and his family were in danger. In June of 1791 King Louis and the royal family tried to escape to Austria where Marie Antoinette's brother was the monarch. They were so close to the border when they were stopped. When stopped they thought that the townspeople would worship them but they did the complete opposite of that. They were then sent Back to Paris and that completely destroyed him and his reputation because he was completely turning his back on his country.

Robespierre, a huge spokesperson and figure for the republic was gaining power in early 1793. During this period he was trying to create a Republic of Virtue. He created a new 30 day calendar with 12 months and renamed the month. he wanted people to forget Sundays because Sunday was the holy day for Catholics. He hated religion along with many other radical revolutionists. For the next year, Robespierre ruled France. Anyone who went against the idea of the revolution was executed. it was absurd how many people were executed.

All "dictatorships" must come to an end. That end came quickly for Robespierre. Members of the national assembly attacked Robespierre with legal threats. On July 28th 1794 Robespierre was executed via the Guillotine. His death brought a sigh of relief among many in France. The government changed again in 1795 after his death. It gave power to the middle and upper class. This government had a 5 man directory which was basically like having 5 presidents. Some of these men were corrupt.

Austria and Prussia warned France that if they did not go back to a monarchy then they would destroy Paris. These two did not want France losing its monarchy because the ideas of the revolution could spread to their countries and also Marie Antoinette's brother is the Monarch of Austria and she is from there. The Prussian commander threatened to destroy Paris if the royal family got hurt. This only enraged the Parisians more. 20,000 people stormed the palace where the royal family was being held and they imprisoned them. Many of the prisons where nobles and priests were being held were attacked and thousands of people from the 2nd and 1st estates were executed in the September massacre.
