So one of my mom's friend actually was a a victim of identity theft. She was filing for a divorce and her ex-husband had a crazy girlfriend. When she wasn't home her ex's girlfriend stole old pay checks that she found in her drawer and she used them to get $80,000. After she heard about this she was now $80,000 in debt. Unfortunately, she could not pay this off so she filed for bankruptcy :( .This stayed of her record for 10 years, and she couldn't get a loan, couldn't buy a car, etc. It's finally off her record so she has gotten another car and is living happily. But she said that when that happened, she had to start over again.
