I would improve the time! I feel as though whenever P.E. time is happening, students spend so much time of it stretching and setting up. I don´t know if that is just in the curriculum that I have taught, but it gives the students no time to get to play the games.

There are a lot of content standards for PE that makes it hard to cover everything in a limited time. Teachers can just make adjustments to cover some of it. It will be a challenge for teachers to come up with activities that require integration of concepts to make a meaningful PE activity.

One suggestion that I would make to improve PE for elementary school students is to make it meaningful. Educate students on why they have to learn it or do it. From what I remember from elementary school, PE was like an extra recess or just running around. The only explanation why we had to do it was because we needed to. There was no real reason why.

I would definitely suggest working to make PE for elementary students as inclusive as possible. Not all students are going to be able to participate in the same ways, so ensuring that there are a wide range of activities, ample accommodations, student choice, and alternative ways to perform tasks is crucial. Children should be able to look forward to PE and not dread it or fear that they may be singled out.

I would definitely make sure there were groups of different levels. Beginners, Intermediate, and Advance. There are students who hate PE because they aren't in shape and get embarrassed when they can't keep up. Then they only do PE for one day if that. How will that help them get in shape? So, I would include more days of PE and make sure there were groups and the students would be able to move up in groups when they feel comfortable.

This not only supports students' social-emotional learning by giving them a choice, but they will also feel more confident when participating in a physical activity that meets their level of physical needs.

Therefore, I would take an inventory at the beginning of the year on what the students enjoy for outside activities...within reason of course :) and try and get those items for classroom PE time. (i.e., could be scoops, bowling, frisbee and bean bag toss) As well, I would try and incorporate more bodily kinesthetic play for the students that utilizes the mind and body connection.

A suggestion that I have for improving PE for elementary school, is to make PE lessons less competitive. When I was in elementary PE, I noticed social hierarchies and statuses form around PE performances. Also, the students who are not not naturally gifted at competitive sports feel no motivation to improve or participate if they know that they will never match the more athletically talented students. I think PE should focus more on personal health and fitness and less on competition.

Mine suggestion is to make PE meaningful. Teach students the importance of staying active, the health conditions that can arise later in life due to lack of exercise. I firmly believe that if we educate students early on they are more prone to continue to stay active the rest of their life.
