In today's society children have instant access to the media and an immediate connection to major news networks through the internet. It is important for children to learn how to decipher what is fact from what is opinion or just made up. Many of the things posted online have a clever one line title that is catchy and grabs the attention of the reader. Majority of the time this title is spreading false rumors and giving readers the wrong idea. It is important for children to be able to determine what to trust and believe and what to not.

When teaching netiquette, I would first explain why it is so important. Comparing it to etiquette and manners may be a way for students to grasp the concept. I would show some videos on cyberbullying and how it can affect someone. I would also try to make it fun. If children feel like they're being lectured, they sometimes decide not to listen, so making the lesson interactive would be the best chance at keeping a child interested. I would allow the children to go on a computer and explore this website, which has information about netiquette, but also games and interactive play!

I never knew that good online behavior had a name. I also never thought about how important it would be to teach in a classroom. The internet is a prominent source in childhood and in order to assure that they're being safe while exploring the internet, teaching netiquette would be extremely valuable. Thinking about my future as a teacher, I was not considering teaching about online behavior. Now, I know I will be. While doing my own research on things like the news and different opinions and viewpoints, I make sure to be looking at credible sources and I think thats one of the most important aspects of research. I will make sure to provide my students with the tools the determine whether an article is bias or false. It's critical when conducting any type of research. In my classroom, whether technology is incorporated or not, I will be teaching about netiquette and news literacy.

Before doing this project, it never crossed my mind that I need to teach my future students about behaving correctly when online and how to determine whether or not an article or website is trustworthy or not. I now realize how important it actually is and I plan on making sure my future classes are all well informed about the topic.

To teach my class about news literacy I would start with a class discussion on believing things read on the internet or social media. I would ask if anyone has ever heard to not believe everything they read online. Then I would show some articles from the internet that are obviously not factual and make sure everyone understood why. We would discuss what news literacy is. Then I could have my students break up into groups and discuss why news literacy is important. After that I would have my students test what they learned by playing a game. I would have printed many different articles from the internet, some being trustworthy articles and others not. I would have the students try and decide which ones were good and which ones were not.
