Imperial rule seemed inconsistent with America's republican principles, and the United States was uninterested in acquiring people with different culture, languages, and religions.<br>2. Many people were "fearful that the country might be closed out in the struggle for global markets and raw materials." European powers seized 10 million square miles of territory and 150 million people were subjected to colonial rule.<br>3. The American economy was dependent on foreign trade. "A quarter of the nation's farm products and half its petroleum were sold overseas."<br>4. It was believed that power in the sea led to power in the world. "National prosperity and power depended on control of the world's sea-lanes."<br>5. "The idea that the United States had a special mission to uplift backward people around the world also commanded growing support." Many religions had missions in Africa and Asia.</div>]]></description>

Lack of raw materials and fearful that the country might be closed out in the struggle in the global market "In the United States, a growing number of policy makers, bankers,  manufacturers, and trade unions grew fearful that the country might be closed out in the struggle for global markets and raw materials"<br>3. " A belief that the world nation were engaged in a Darwinian struggle for survival and that countries that failed to compete were doomed to decline." Country that were engaged in Darwinian believed that if you do not expand your country will fail. <br>4."Whoever rule the waves rules the world" Mahan. Mahan was a naval strategist and argued that national prosperity and power depended on control of the world's sea lane.<br>5. The United States wanted to help out those less fortunate around the world.  This also was a big factor in expansion. "The idea that the United States had a special mission to uplift "backward" people around the world also commanded growing support." <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. <br>☞Military power, Great Britain's military was 5 times the size of America's army. <br>☞Navy power, its navy was 10 times the size of America's navy. America was a young country and had little experience with diplomacy.<br>2. Europeans scramble for empire, this made Americans realize they could get more power and control over others. "A shift had taken place in American attitudes toward expansion that was sparked partly by a european scramble for empire" (Paragraph 4).<br>3. The US realized that they were too dependant on other countries and they wouldn't survive without them. "By the 1890s, American economy was increasingly dependant on foreign trade." (Paragraph 5).<br>4. Control of the seas meant control of the world. "'Whoever rules the waves rules the world,' Mahan wrote." They started to expand outwards and control the sea.<br><br>5.<br>The US wanted to "uplift 'backward' people around the world". They wanted to spread religion.
