Mamishu had sent Michael to ride with a stranger to Uncle Sam and Aunt Cecia’s house. When Mamishu had first put Michael in the vehicle, she believed that the man was harmless and kind. However, this turned out to be the opposite of the reality. The man pulled down a vacant street and began to assault Michael. Michael does not go into much detail about the event. Therefore, I wonder what really occurred during the event that still is difficult for Michael to open up about.

While on his way to the Gymnasium where Michael is learning Hebrew, he runs into two boys. Although Germany had been liberated, many people still disliked Jews. The two boys began to make fun of Michael for his appearance and for being a Jew. This quote was powerful to me because even after the end of the Nazi Regime, many people still held predjudice against the Jewish faith. (Page 285)

While the Nazi soldiers watched over the laborers, they quickly realized a strong Jewish man by the name of Abe Turbetchsi. The guards decided that they were going to test his strength. They made him pick up a large piece of equipment and run back and forth down one of the streets in Żarki. Some people laughed at his suffering. Th soldiers then told him to sing a Polish song while running. This event was eye opening to me because he would rather die then continue to be tortured.

Before Michael was born, Mamishu was traveling through Żarki in an effort to visit her parents. So reach her parents farm, Mamishu had to travel past the cemetery. While she was making her way past the cemetery, she heard sobbing. Mamishu then hid behind a tree and watched as a man, his wife, and young daughter were being held at gunpoint by a Nazi Guard. The man was digging a hole that would soon become the grave for himself, along with the rest of his family. The soldier then ordered the family to take of their clothes. After following the orders the family was shot. This scene was powerful to be because it shows how truly ruthless the Nazis were towards Jews.

The residents of Żarki were being moved concentration camps, almost a guaranteed death sentence. However, Officer Schmitt informed Micheal’s father that him and his family would be taking their own truck to a munitions factory in Pionki. The event was powerful to me because it showed that Officer Schmitt felt some guilt for killing thousands of Jews. The scene also shows that Schmitt has a sense of respect for the Bornstein family.

In the munitions camp, Micheal and his family’s quality of life had improved. The man who ran the factory was nice towards his workers but if they were found deserting the factory they were hung. Although life for the Bornstein’s was improving, this would shortly come to an end. The workers were informed that they were all being moved the Auschwitz, a concentration camp. The quote had a strong impact on me since it was almost guaranteed that you would die while staying at Auschwitz.

After being unloaded from the cattle car, Michael and his family would get their first glimpse of the the concentration camp. Auschwitz, a place that held some of the most inhumane acts ever stricken upon humans, is described to the reader. This scene made showed me some of the horrors that the jews trapped inside the camps faced. From the malnourishment, the smoke of the crematories, or the smell of burning flesh, the visuals depicted truly give the reader a insight upon the concentration camps.

After arriving at Auschwitz, Michael was given his prison uniform and his wooden shoes. He would then be hurried by Nazi guards into a long line. Once he was at the front of the line, Michael received a tattoo that read B-1148, his prisoner number. The process of the tattoo was very painful for Micheal as the needle dig into his skin. This event was powerful to me because the tattoo is an everlasting reminder of his experiences during his stay at Auschwitz.

Inside Auschwitz, the barracks were separated into three different sections, men, women, and children. Young children were not allowed to stay with their mother, facing the rough living conditions of the crowed barracks on their own. The other children did their best to protect Michael but still took some of his food. One night, Mamishu made the decision to go rescue Micheal from the children’s barracks and bring him back to her living quarter. Mamishu was able to sneak out of the barracks and save Micheal, all without being seen by a guard. This event was powerful to me because it showed that Mamishu would risk her life to make sure that her child is safe.

After the traumatic experience that Micheal faced when being attacked by the man in the car, Micheal returned back to his home. Outside of the apartment complex, stood the landlord who wore a swastika necklace. The lady could see that Michael was visibly upset and comforted him until his mother got home. The event was powerful to me because it showed how Frau Müller was able to put aside her difference in beliefs and comfort Micheal in a time of need.
