The Canterbury Tales was written by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1387. The Canterbury Tales is one of his well-known works and he worked on this until he passed away in 1400. It's one of the first major literature works written in the English language and it tells the tales of 23 pilgrims who are all travelling together to Canterbury. The pilgrims come from different backgrounds and Chaucer has an opinion on each of them. The Canterbury Tales takes place in 14th century England, during a period of social unrest.

An important part of life in the medieval period was the Church. The Christian faith was a huge part of daily life for most people, who believed that their salvation depended upon the Sacraments. But many controversial practices, like the selling of pardons, had become more and more prevalent in the late fourteenth century. This led to many negative stereotypes about many religious figures. You can see these stereotypes in The Canterbury Tales with the portrayal of religious figures like the Summoner, Pardoner, and Friar.

In the Canterbury takes we see how social classes play a big role in society. The main factor in the division of these classes are wealth. This is similar to today’s world where we see middle class and lower class people in this world separated by wealth.
