In finding inspiration for this assignment, I decided to choose a topic related to situations that I am faced with regularly as a mother of two busy boys. Tending to young children also means dealing with multiple crises, sometimes all in one day, and hopefully not every day (insert exhausted face emoji). From a simple band-aid for a scraped knee, to having to perform the Heimlich on a choking child or even CPR, these are things that are all too important. I thought it interesting to learn through an app, and if it was even possible.

I choose to use the application First Aid for New Parents on my mobile device to get more directive and reliable instructions when it comes to treating my children. I chose this app because after a quick search I liked the interface and found that the video links for each chapter were short, to the point, and seemed simple to follow at a glance. Before looking at a few lessons and viewing my video demonstrations, I have listed the pros and cons of self-directed learning.

In the age of accessible information, self-directed learning occurs more than I even realized. Simply watching a YouTube video, tutorial, or using google to search and understand more about a topic are things I engage in almost every day. Being able to learn autonomously has many advantages such as; time flexibility, the pace at which you proceed through the learning, the comfort of where you choose to do your learning, the materials you wish to use, and even a decreased amount of pressure to perform in front of others. Self-directed learning also allows you more flexibility to explore and expand in areas you may not have in an instructor directed course. I truly enjoyed the self-directed learning I was able to do in this assignment that relates so closely to something personal to me.

Though there are many positives to self-directed learning, there is also a much greater dependence on self-discipline and motivation. If the subject matter does not interest the learner that much, they may prioritize other activities. Another downside to self-directed learning is the lack of face to face interactions compared to traditional learning. This can, in some instances, unmotivate learners or make them feel more isolated. I enjoyed covering the lessons of this app and learning via the short videos, but discussing about it in a group context and the personal touch of face-to-face interaction that allows an instructor to guide you through complex step-by-step processes like in first aid training, made for a much different experience. Further, self-directed learning could seem too vast for some learners who may ask themselves where to start and how to ask for questions when stuck.

Receiving first aid and CPR training in a real-life instructor based setting in my opinion is undoubtedly superior because of the complexity of performing some tasks correctly and being guided in how to do so. However, I have to say that I deeply recommend this app. Either for a memory refresh or if you can not attend classes in person, the information within the app is important and essential and can save a child's life. There is also so much information that it can be used to make preliminary assessments, and help parents and caregivers decide whether or not to seek further help. As previously stated the app is easy to navigate and videos are short and informative for on the go questions, worries and questions we as parents ask ourselves regularly. It will always refer you to ask or see a doctor, and never try to make a diagnosis. It is a good tool that I could see combined after an actual in person first aid training class and can be a great substitute until space does become available for a class or for those who really are not able to get physical hands on first aid training. One negative aspect from the app is that the information grids are a bit small to read on the cell phone and when over-zooming the words are blurry. This could easily be improved for mobile device users. From the computer the image is larger and easier to see.

In learning through the app, I was not able to go over all of the chapters, but instead focused on areas that I found more important to me. The last time I did a first aid course was the St. John Ambulance certification in high school and so I was enthusiastic to learn or even re-learn information that has slipped through the cracks (yes of my brain). I focused my attention where I was unsure of information and went where interest guided me, making this assignment extremely interesting and self-motivating. I chose to demonstrate the lessons covering Infant fever, Choking, and CPR. In the next posts 8,9, and 10 I have attached the images taken directly from the application and written them down in text format as well. When clicking on the QR code available at the top of each chapter, the application takes you to a webpage with an individualized video message/ tutorial. In posts 11, 12, & 13 you will be able to view my practical application of what I have learned through the app. I believe I achieved an important goal in gaining vital information pertaining to first aid and CPR skills regarding young children. Reading through and watching numerous videos, I continue to feel a sense of relief with new information I learn. I feel more confident in knowing that I will be more prepared if a life threatening situation presents itself with my children. The app is continually updated with relevant information and I know I can always go back and view information if needed.
