"but you got it all wrong. the suffragettes were all about speaking up, screaming for their rights. You can't speak up for your right to be silent. that's letting the bad guys win. if the suffragettes did that, women wouldn't be about to vote yet."(Anderson 159) The advice that David gave Melinda was really good. It tells Melinda that she does need to speak up about what happened at the party, even though David didn't know what happened. That if she stays silent then Andy would win, and because Melinda isn't speaking up Andy could hurt other people like he did to Melinda.

He tells her that the suffragettes spoke up for themselves, and that Melinda deciding to stay silent is counterproductive. I think this is very good advice, for anyone, but mostly Melinda, because throughout the whole book she has remained silent and hasn't spoken up for herself. So this advice could lead to her having a voice, and speaking up for herself.
- Dellen Berrios

David basically tells Melinda that she had the right idea and intention just not the right execution. The suffragettes spoke up about their inequality, that´s how they got justice not just by sitting down and feeling sorry for themselves. He tells her ¨ But you don´t expect to make a difference unless you speak up for yourself¨ I truly believe this was the best advice he could´ve have given her because she now sees her behavior from a different point of view. David had no idea what she was going through or anything about her life yet he told her that he needs to speak up. I think that´ll have an impact on her attitude towards things moving forward.

"don't expect to make a difference unless you speak up" (Anderson 159). I think that David gave amazing advice. Even though he doesn't know what Melinda is actually going through, he still managed to tell Melinda something she really needed to hear. Now she may be able to speak up, because of David. She has been silent and has been carrying so much guilt for no reason. She isn't guilty. She is a victim. Once she speaks up about it she will feel better and will be able to get help.

"But don't expect to make a difference unless you speak up for yourself" (Anderson 159). This was the best advice David could've gave Melinda. I believe that the only things we humans have is are voice and action. If someone took that away from us we have nothing. This plan would've been amazing but their was two parts to the movement and she forgot the most important part, SPEAKING. David is 100% correct we can't expect to make a difference unless we speak up for are self, that's why people was walking all over Melinda in the beginning because she didn't use her voice. If you don't speak for yourself then who will?

David said ‘‘But don’t expect to make a difference unless you speak up for yourself.’’ I think David provided us with a quick realization for people that always shut down when people are trying to give them help when they are in need of it but don't want to speak about it. It helps individuals come out of their comfort zone and start explaining and after they explain whats happening in their life they tend to be more positive and start moving on from it.
