He tells her that the suffragettes spoke up for themselves, and that Melinda deciding to stay silent is counterproductive. I think this is very good advice, for anyone, but mostly Melinda, because throughout the whole book she has remained silent and hasn't spoken up for herself. So this advice could lead to her having a voice, and speaking up for herself.

when David gave her the advice something sparked because she decided to stay home but while she was at home she helped with home and even talked to her mom and dad. This means she's recovering slowly but surely she will speak out because of David's advice.

When your silent there will be no process for your mental healing because nothing is being done.

The suffragettes spoke up about their inequality, that´s how they got justice not just by sitting down and feeling sorry for themselves. He tells her ¨ But you don´t expect to make a difference unless you speak up for yourself¨ I truly believe this was the best advice he could´ve have given her because she now sees her behavior from a different point of view. David had no idea what she was going through or anything about her life yet he told her that he needs to speak up. Now she may be able to speak up, because of David. She has been silent and has been carrying so much guilt for no reason. She isn't guilty.
