It all started when she spent an evening with a guy named Justin Foley. He had approached her at school, and they exchanged numbers. Later that evening, they met up at a park and played around. She had her first kiss with him that night. However, when she slid down the slide, he took an unflattering picture of her which then got passed around the whole school the next day. It was the beginning of all the slut-shaming untrue rumors which Justin failed to deny and set the record straight.

Hannah has two friends at the beginning of the book, Jessica and Alex. Alex and Jessica were really close almost her entire sophomore year, and then they began to date. They started avoiding and leaving Hannah out. She lost her two best and only friends all at once. On top of all this, Alex wanted to make Jessica jealous, so he decided to make a list saying the best and worst qualities of all the girls in the school. Saying Hannah had the best butt and Jessica had the worst. This tore Jessica and Hannah apart forever, she even slapped Hannah blaming it all on her when really she had nothing to do with it. This also made Hannah into an inanimate object and target instead of a real human being.

Hannah managed to make one other friend and her name was Courtney. They bonded through their shared classes together. Hannah even ended up telling her about the fact that she thought she had a stalker taking pictures of her in her room. So, Courtney decides to sleepover and help Hannah set a trap to catch this stalker. However, Courtney turned out to be gay and was into Hannah but she hadn't accepted her sexuality. Courtney was not ready to be out of the closet yet. She made a move on Hannah while they were slightly tipsy and the stalker caught that on camera. Courtney didn't want the world to know yet, so when the picture got around school, he denied it and turned the whole thing on Hannah so she received all of the bullying for it. After that, Courtney completely shut Hannah out of her life forever.

This is the main reason Hannah gave up. She was invited to a party and got in a hot tub with a bunch of people, but slowly everyone started to leave and it ended up being just her and a guy named Bryce. He had forced himself onto Jessica before, and Hannah had the terrible experience of witnessing it. Hannah knew she had to get out of there. But he wouldn't let her leave. He overpowered her and sexually assaulted her. He had no consequences the last time, so he wasn't afraid to do it again. Hannah states that she had already begun to lose hope, but that night, she lost her soul. A few nights later she ends up alone with Clay, the only boy who actually cares about her, but Hannah had been so mistreated this far that she pushed him out and completely isolated herself. She thought she couldn't trust anyone anymore and was totally alone.

Hannah finally decides to try and get help. She seeks out the school counselor, Mr. Porter, saying on the last tape that if it helps, she will give life one last try. Unfortunately, this goes badly for Hannah, too. She has troubles opening up and telling him exactly what she's been through. Mr. Porter reads all the signs wrong and Hannah ends up getting worse instead of better. The way that Mr. Porter reacted was how she thought everyone else would then react, too. She was all alone in the world at that moment -- defeated and down. So, that night, she went and took her own life. She left behind no letter or reasons except for the few people who received tapes, which contained the clues and reasons as to why she did that to herself. In the end, she had no one to help her, and that destroys a person

Justin Foley was a smaller character in the book, but one of the most cruel. He was Hannah's first kiss, and didn't care. He started rumors about her, and just how far they went together. Justin never thought of the bigger picture, and the consequences that could come from hurting someone's feelings. Hannah says, "A rumor based on a kiss ruined a memory that I hoped would be special.” He makes many mistakes throughout the story, but has a horrifying and terrible home life, which is no excuse, but shows some insight on why he might be this way.

He struggles with listening through all of the tapes. But in the end, he states he's doing it for Hannah because he deeply cared about her, saying "It's respect.

Hannah Baker is the protagonist in the story. She is honest, brave, and not afraid to speak her mind. She knew she couldn't change what other people thought of her, that she had no control over that, but until her life just kept getting worse, she kept trying. While in the end she did give up and die, she stayed strong for as long as she could on her own. She had absolutely nobody to depend on, which is a very difficult thing in a cruel high school environment.

Thirteen Reasons Why is a novel by Jay Asher which tells the story of a new girl trying to fit in at her new high school after moving. It talks about her horrible experiences at this high school where her friends abandon her, terrible rumors get started about her, her family faces financial problems, and it just keeps getting worse from there until she can't take it anymore and decides to take her own life because she felt she had no one there for her. Before she dies however, she records seven double sided tapes, each explaining a reason for why she killed herself. She sends each of the tapes to everyone she feels played a role in her decision. Clay Jensen received them last. He listens to every single tape, and is just hurt and maddened that this happened to her. He is the only person out of everyone to receive the tapes that actually does something about it. The novel is a mix between Hannah's and Clay's thoughts throughout the whole situation.
