Hi! This is part of a piece called “Beatrix.” I’ve been working on it for a couple weeks and it’s just a piece to work on with other techniques. A couple goals I have for this piece are to use open mouth staccato on shorter notes while maintaining air support throughout. There’s also a couple measures where I panicked and freaked out. I have also worked on connecting phrases and breathing when necessary, before I run out of air. I hope to continue improving on this piece and the techniques.

We started our first lesson of the semester with warm-ups as always. We went through long tones repeating each phrase twice, both times forte but with vibrato the second time. Karin gave me two packets, one with minor scales and another with scales studies (major). I’m learning a D Major scale study and the first three minor scales in the packet. We then went to a piece I’ve been studying over the month of July, Beatrix. I need to focus and isolate hot spots as well as practice in chunks. I’m also working on taking breaths that are musical.

Monday and Wednesday, 3pm: I began working on the first three minor scales in the packet, after my long tones. I practiced learning them at 80 and got up to 85 bpm. I then got them to 96 by the end of practice on Wednesday. Both of these days were then used to isolate and work on chunks. First slowly, then getting them back up to tempo without stopping.
Tuesday and Thursday, 11:15am: I focused a bit more on my long tones to ensure I’m getting a cleaner attack as well as better air support. I then worked on my major scales and my major scale studies. I started at 85 on Tuesday and slowly got up to 135 on Thursday.

Goals!

My semester goals for lessons are to be solid on both my major and minor scales. I have packets with both types of scales on them to work on my goal, that will help me with my music reading as well. Two other goals I have are to continue improving on vibrato, while maintaining my sound, and to improve on reading a whole piece through (even when I make a mistake). My long term goals are to get audition pieces ready for transferring to a four year, where I’d want to continue improving as a musician. Some systems I can put in place to achieve them are to start every practice, individual or not, with long tones and scales. I can focus on certain keys each day to isolate them as well. I can also use long tones then slowly use vibrato on them as well as other pieces of music to ensure I’m getting quality sound. I can continue working on my pieces as well as recording myself so I can get a glimpse at what I sound like. Three atomic habits I can start doing are warming up with scales, thinking of sound as I practice/perform, and dedicate myself to the pieces I need to perform.

Update to My Goals

My goals for the semester have progressed well! I have gotten my speed on my major scale up while starting to memorize all of my minor scales. The packet I was given was very helpful in this manner. I have done a bit better on my reading through sections, even when I make mistakes. It's all about pushing through past your mistake and focusing on the upcoming sections through the end. This is practiced alone and applied, especially in ensemble where we keep playing regardless of mistakes. I have progressed on vibrato as well. I have began looking and working on audition pieces for the four years I am applying to. The systems I put into place where helpful into ensuring my success with my goals. The atomic habits were also things I started to think of on a daily basis.

We started off with scales as usual. I have been practicing religiously with a metronome so my scales were solid! I do have to think of rolling out my head joint when reaching the higher octave to avoid sounding air and shrill. I got a new scale study out of the same packet for the week. We also went over the Beatrix piece I've had for a bit. I need to study the piano part to understand how our parts would line up in a rehearsal. I also need to increase the tempo as it is meant to feel bouncy and light. I also showed her some material that I need to have ready for a wind ensemble audition. It is part of a run in one our pieces as well as a couple scale exercises focused around D Major.

Monday and Wednesday, 3pm: I always start my practices with my long tones, if I haven't mentioned it yet! After that, I went to my scale packets, which had the next minor scales added. I started these off at about 85 and got them up to 96 by the end of Wednesday. I ensure I know what notes are in the key before going to play them. I kept my sound in mind as I played with a drone and knew to roll out to avoid shrill tones.
Tuesday and Thursday, 11:15am: After doing my long tones, I first tackled increasing the tempo on my Beatrix piece, which I accomplished my rehearsing chunks and then adding onto them. I got up to ten clicks faster by the end of Thursday. I also went to do my scale studies which were similar to the previous week, just with different rhythms. I still started off slow before slowly speeding up the tempo, I got to 110 after starting at 80. I then continued to work on the audition work and got the runs under my fingers at about 100 bpm.
