For the most part, I embody the stereotypical young male IT guy persona. I don't really have many interests that can be considered pop-culture. However, in recent years the media and hobbies that were once considered niche and contrarian is now gaining popularity. For instance, Esports were once considered the domain of the unathletic computer addict. But now it is growing in acceptance especially with younger people. Similarly, anime and other media from Japan is growing in popularity thanks to the success of many shows. Due to this, hobbies like cosplay are becoming mainstream. Finally, with the recent film adaptations of comic books and literature there is a growing interest in the source material driving more people to reading. As such, everybody enjoys different things, we don't need to follow what is popular and mainstream to be happy.

Historically coffee shops are a place for educated young citizens to come together and discuss the current state of affairs. It is in these places where ideas can be shared before the dawn of the internet. Many of the thinkers and philosophers of 19th and 20th century gathered in these coffee shops and exchanged ideas with one another. Culturally coffee played an important role in society as it is a stimulant and unlike other narcotics it is perfectly safe giving people a way to give themselves a boost in energy. It became important when people worked longer hours during the industrial revolution.

So why are coffee shops in the Philippines only gaining popularity now? Well usually coffee drinking is not a social affair for Filipinos. It is a start to the day or a break in work a quiet comfort to relax or contemplate alone. Not to mention instant coffee is quick to prepare and consume. However, with a demographic shift, an increase in disposable income and a young educated middle class. It is in coffee shops that these people can enjoy a good quality cup of coffee and since it takes longer to make and consume, it can be a social event where people can meet and exchange ideas. Also, many young Filipinos still live with their parents, as such coffee shops provide them with a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the house and either study or work in peace.
