Our extraordinary students often come to us without the ordinary experiences expected of their age group. Since many of our students come from homes with low economic status, it is a challenge to provide those experiences. So, we work purposefully to provide as much enrichment as possible to help the students make connections to make the learning relevant. The kids are rather amazing, and when they fully understand the expectations, they are far more often than not, willing to work their tales off to meet those expectations!

I see students whose strength is willingness to work hard, who dream big, and who rise to the expectations and beyond that are set upon them. Opportunities for growth that I see is collaboration with others. Students in second grade, I've noticed, have a difficult time collaborating effectively in a group setting. I feel, by having multiple opportunities for students to collaborate and with specific guidelines, it helps them to learn how to collaborate more effectively.

I see our student diversity as our biggest strength. Students are able to learn from each other's differences in the classroom. Our challenge as educators is to show these same students how to work together as a team or class to solve problems. The solutions are there waiting to be discovered when kids can extend their understanding and learn to work with those among them who are different.

I see capable learners in everyone. Success is achieved by finding their interests, motivating and challenging their minds to want to learn more about what their learning and achieve a finished product that makes them proud of themselves because they know they gave it their all. Trial and error w/ many mistakes along the way are the best opportunities you can give a kid. Without it you won't find SUCCESS and that is what makes them STRONGER in mind, body and soul.

The strengths I have seen include a willingness to learn and share new things learned with peers. I've also seen a lot of creativity expressed through art, language, engineering, etc. Some challenges I see are lack of confidence in learning and knowing that it is a process. Failures are learning opportunities, and an essential part of the learning process. I think some of these challenges may stem from a number of reasons. But our kids are resilient and have so much potential.

I use this to my advantage in the classroom by helping low performing students make progress. This is an asset when we are talking about growth. By showing your students you believe in them and adding to that their ability to overcome difficult situations, the sky is the limit!

Strengths I see in students is collaboration and communication. I implemented an activity with daily assignments to build on these strengths by having them discuss answers to questions and allowing them to agree or disagree with the chosen answer. If students disagree they are to communicate their thinking and the group would help each other understand the answer.
An opportunity for growth is building relationships with students and encouraging them to build strengths in other skills.

I think WP ISD students work collaboratively, serve others, have strong character and think critically when they are motivated toward a common goal. They struggle with formal communication, goal setting, and motivation. Sadly , many do not believe they can escape their current circumstances and achieve beyond what their families have.

Strengths I see in my students are determination to succeed and resilience through overcoming many obstacles. They are quick to help others and have good communication skills when they collaborate. I try to give them opportunities and activities to work together , as peer tutors, and to utilize their tremendous artistic talents. They are so limited in experiences outside the classroom. Many lack self-confidence and are shy about their successes. I try to use many real-world examples and connections in my lessons, and to give them opportunities to share their experiences to connect with concepts.
