Often students react to not seeing educators that look like them, thus the school becomes to them a window on society as a whole. Do we want to reflect what we see in society or change things for the better? If we see something do we say something or are we contributing to the veil of silence that surrounds racism ? I speak up and out! I teach my students the same! Melissa

I find it is important to build relationships so teenagers will share. I send home a game packet with dice and have a social even on Zoom from 2-3pm. I create breakout rooms and the students can talk in small groups. Also with the games I find the students recognize it is important for others to have someone to play with so they will join in a game with others.

I talk to my elementary students and let them know about the handicapped students behavior and encourage them to play with them. Often the handicapped student has an adult with them so it is really helpful to ask a sensitive student to play with the student. The adult does not always notice how to set this up so it is a relief for the adult to see the handicapped student engage in play.
