It has provided communication from one place to another in a faster and easier way. It wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for Alexander Graham Bell and his assistances Thomas Watson, they created the first historical telephone in 1876. He invented the telephone by experimenting with sound using devices such as the harmonic telegraph. 
As the telephone got known, companies later got formed, the invention of the telephone lead to development of city centers and office buildings.
Telephones are not used very much now in days because they've been replaced by cellphones, cellphones are now able to play music and run applications (apps) that both entertain, help and link people across the world. The telephone has had one of the greatest impacts in our society. I believe that phones will continue to evolve into an even more useful tools that will further advance technology.
