Unlike nineteenth century Europe, large-scale emigration from today's developing countries is not possible.

Compared with Europe, Japan, and North America in their periods of fastest population growth, income in developing countries is still low, human and physical capital are less built up, and in some countries political and social institutions are less well established.

Many developing countries whose economies are still largely dependent on agriculture can no longer draw on large tracts of unused land.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that population explosion in the country has and will create various problems for the coming generations. There is a need for social awareness in the country. This article is a small initiative to emphasize the impact of overpopulation in India on world population day which falls on July 11.
Scientists suggest that the overall human impact due to overpopulation on the environment is causing overconsumption, excessive pollution, and proliferation of technology, has pushed the planet into a new geological epoch known as the Anthropocene.
With the advancement of science and technology, the mortality rate among humans has reduced significantly and within the last two centuries the population has increased manifolds.

Human resource is the biggest asset but it is becoming a liability to our nation. According to the 1941 census of India, the population of India was nearly 31 crore which since then has increased more than four times since independence. The current population is estimated to be 138 crore. The surface area of Indian land is 2.4 per cent but the Indian population is 18 per cent of the world population. India is the second most populous nation in the world after China.

Per capita income is an average and this average may not represent the standard of living of the people, if the increased national income goes to the few rich instead of giving to the many poor. Thus unless national income is evenly distributed, per capita income cannot serve as a satisfactory indicator of development.
Per Capita Income as a Growth Indicator : Dividing GDP/GNP by the total population one gets per capita GDP/GNP. Conventionally, per capita income is used as an index of development.
