         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Auschwitz-Birkenau was built in the suburbs of Oswiecim, a city in the south of Nazi-occupied Poland. This was a network of several camps, combining forced labor and extermination camps. While Soviet forces approached the camp, the Nazis killed several thousand prisoners, and began evacuating others from the camps, forcing them to go on horrible death walks. Auschwitz-Birkenau has become a symbol of the horror of industrialized murder, and what can happen when hatred is left unchecked.</div>]]></description>

Roosevelt, Churchill, and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/summary/Joseph-Stalin">Joseph Stalin</a> discussed the postwar occupation of Germany, postwar assistance to the German people, German disarmament, war-crimes trials, the fate of the defeated or liberated states of eastern Europe, voting in the future <a href="https://www.britannica.com/summary/United-Nations-Security-Council">United Nations Security Council</a>, and German reparations. Stalin agreed to enter the war against Japan after the German surrender.          <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;Japan had lost World War II.&nbsp; Japan and the United States both knew it.&nbsp; How long would it be, however, before Japan surrendered?&nbsp; Japan was split between surrender or fighting to the end. President Harry S Truman was notified of the successful test of the atomic bomb, what he called “the most terrible bomb in the history of the world.”&nbsp; Thousands of hours of research and development as well as billions of dollars had contributed to its production.&nbsp; This was no theoretical research project, it was created to destroy and kill on a massive scale.&nbsp; As president, it was Truman’s decision if the weapon would be used with the goal to end the war.&nbsp; “It is an awful responsibility that has come to us,” the president wrote.<br><br></div>]]></description>
