I tried to select one graphic novel from the list teacher gave us. I am interested in the girl's story because her listen disability. She lives different life than normal people. I wonder what her life is like growing up with hearing disability. Another interesting thing is that I first thought this is a story related with Spanish because the name "El Deafo" sounds a lot like Spanish. I have studied Spanish in high school and also read some kids' readings in Spanish. I am interested in Spanish culture. After I read it, I realize this book does not have much to do with Span or Spanish. But it is still good read. I like this graphic novel!

Before I select this book I read this book review. This sentence drew my attention: "Bell’s book should be an inspiration for those who are “different,” and it should help others to understand just what being different means. " People always are afraid to be different, but this graphic novel uses relaxing tone to tell us what being different means. It is something both adult and child have to understand.

One part I like a lot in this book is the parallel world. There are many times Cece imagines herself as a superhero and her all the hardships in life are her enemy. The creation of the parallel world makes the text more interesting to read. It is another demonstration of funnier, more optimistic version of reality. I was engaged with the graphic design and plot. The coming of age story of Cece is good for both adults and children to read and learn.

It's important that the settings in this graphic novel are very common and exist in everyone's life. For example, plots about making new friends, meeting new crush, and family drama, etc. These plots and settings happen in everyone's life, so we can all related. Beyond this, it tells the coming of age story of girl with listening disabilities. I believe this is a book should be read in every school, because it tells warm story of every boy and girl is going through at that age even if they don't have any disabilities. Cece is no different than her classmates. Everyone wants to be loved and be cherished.

Not every story you tell has to be a surprising, edge-of-your-seat epic. Some of the most successful and memorable stories are relatively simple and straightforward. Don’t let needless details to detract from your core message. Work from the principle that “less is more.”

source: https://hbr.org/2014/07/how-to-tell-a-great-story

"The need to rethink reading (as well as conceptions of text) has not been confined to digital technologies or the screen. As I have mentioned earlier, there is always ‘‘slippage’’ and ‘‘connections’’ between the ‘‘old’’ and the ‘‘new’’. As a consequence, conceptions of reading across a variety of sites of display are in a process of change. The multimodal resources available to readers are central to rethinking what reading is and what it might become in a blended, digital communicational environment. Having said this, the ‘‘new’’ range and configurations of modes that digital technologies make available present different potentials for reading than print texts. These modal reconfigurations almost demand that the multimodal character of reading be attended to."

Source: Multimodality, ‘‘Reading’’, and

‘‘Writing’’ for the 21st Century

by Carey Jewitt*

“A multimodal approach to shapes of knowledge helps to highlight the particular

affordances and resistances of learning resources. This brings to the fore the questions

of what curriculum resources can be designed to do (and not do) and what teachers

and students actually do with multimodal texts in the classroom.
