Carol Ann Duffy was born on December 23, 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland. When she was 6, Duffy and her family moved to Stafford, England where her father worked as a fitter for an electric company. It was here that she discovered her love for poetry at age 14. (Britannica)

Duffy attended Liverpool University in 1977 where she earned a degree in philosophy. She began writing for television shows before transitioning over to publishing books of poetry about the dark entanglements of love. Some of Duffy’s accolades include a “…five-year grant from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts in England, a Lannan Literary Award…the T. S. Eliot Poetry Prize,” and Britain’s Poet Laureate from May 2009 to 2019 (poets.org). Currently, she “..is the Creative Director of the Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University,” (poets.org).
