The Crusades shaped world history by expanding the extent of European rule. They expanded around the Mediterranean, taking many countries from Muslim control. The Crusades also solidified the control the pope had on the people of Europe. They helped end the feudal system because the lords and knights were all being killed in foreign countries and their heirs defaulted to the church in all political matters. A lot of modern countries have a cross on their flag, symbolizing the unification of the church and how wide-spread it is.

The Crusades was a holy war between Christianity and Islam. The Christians wanted to retake Jerusalem from the muslims because they believed the holy land belonged to them. It was also an exercise of the absolute power the church had over people. Christians fought the wars because they were promised riches and a guaranteed ticket to heaven.

Although the crusades failed to capture Jerusalem, they had several major impacts on Western Europe. They increased the authority of the king: Sometimes nobles died in battle without leaving an heir in which case the king got their land. Kings passed taxes to pay for the crusades.

The Crusades changed the religion of Europe in many ways. First, it checked the power of the pope. Before the crusades, the pope had absolute power over people and kings, but after the fighting stopped the crusaders went home in defeat. This defeat made the pope seem less than all knowing. In the modern age, the Crusades have had a lasting effect on the relationship between the two faiths. There is still a feud that was provoked by 200 years of unjustified warfare that has lasted 1000 years.
