And I find it cool how they get to sort of live a nomatic life style. As well as how fast the mood changes from an argument to a car chase and right back to peaceful. Its also shows just how much these kids are being both negativly and positivly affected by the parents.

We see the family go through a lot of things every where they go. Jeannette at one point falls out of the of a moving car and somehow manages to stay calm for a long time until her familey returns. I think the author put the part of the joshua tree there to emphasise resilliance. We also see her get jumped in 1st grade and still go back and fight again.
