On the third trip to the plantation they were accosted by Jackson - a greasy-looking youth from the village. He was always up to no good and spent his days chasing birds and grasshoppers in the plantation. The lad look one sniff at Namidi and his eyebrows stretched wide.

Why are you working in Shell now?" he said, and grinned knowingly at Namidi.

Mama Efe was watching her husband as he eyed the youth with a look of hatred.

What business of yours is it? he countered in a cold voice, and surveyed the youth, like some wayward fly.

You should know, anything that happens in this village I make it my business, Jackson said, and rubbed his hands.

Namidi looked annoyed, like he had been insulted. He advanced towards the youth, eyes blazing, but held himself together with some effort when his wife placed a restraining arm on him. He turned away and continued walking, stiff-necked, down the narrow track. Mama Efe, a few steps behind her husband, was trembling with dread. He said not a word but she knew that darkness was brewing within him.

Already, the smell of the petrol had reached them; so too had the hissing sound from the plantation. Jackson uttered a cry behind them and then ran off in the opposite direction towards the village, so in the last they found a new bad antagonist and that was a wind who wanted to destroy, kill and burn the village so the protagonistic hero’s come and start fighting them back! So they started fighting and the but the antagonistic were so strong so some of hero’s got hurt. At the last every hero’s fight and they got the win and the village was saved by the hero’s but they were all got hurt by the enemy!

Namidi: Did we lose the fire? I don't hear it anymore.

Sani: I think so. But we should keep going. Just a little more.

They kept running until they got to a small hill. From the top, they could see the fire far away.

Mama Efe: Thank goodness we’re safe… for now.

Suddenly, the lantern from before started glowing again — but this time, it was flying in the air!

Sani: Whoa! Is that the same lantern?

Namidi: Yeah! But... how is it flying?

The lantern floated in front of them, then slowly moved down a path.

Mama Efe: I think it wants us to follow it.

Sani: Should we?

Namidi: I trust it. It helped us before.

They followed the lantern as it lit up the dark path. Soon they came to a small cave behind some trees.

Mama Efe: Let’s hide here until the fire goes away.

As they went inside, the lantern stayed by the door, shining bright.

Namidi: It’s watching over us.

Sani: Like a hero.

They sat in the cave, tired but safe. Outside, the fire slowly went out.

And the lantern... kept glowing.

4o mini

Startled, all three turned to see a rusty old scarecrow, oddly equipped with a blinking light and a speaker on its chest. This was Scrap-9, a forgotten security bot left from Shell’s old experiments—long abandoned but still partially functioning. It stood crooked among the tall grass, its eyes flickering dimly as it scanned the area.

Jackson’s grin faltered. “That thing’s still active?”

From the shadows emerged another figure—Madam Kofo, the village herbalist and a bitter rival of Mama Efe. She walked slowly, her cane tapping ominously on the dry ground. Her eyes locked on Namidi.

Madam Kofo (antagonist): “So it is true… Namidi returns to work for the enemy.”

Namidi (coldly): “You speak like a ghost from the past, Kofo.”

Madam Kofo: “Better a ghost than a traitor. The land remembers, and so do I.”

The air grew heavy. Even Scrap-9’s head tilted, as if sensing the growing storm.

Scrap-9 (inanimate character): “Conflict detected. Neutralizing hostiles…”

Its metal arms twitched, but the rust stopped it from moving further.

Mama Efe clutched her husband’s arm again, whispering, “Let’s not wake the land’s wrath further.”

But it was too late. The plantation had heard.

Just as Jackson’s footsteps faded into the distance, a voice—cool and commanding—cut through the rustling leaves.

Aunty Kemi:

“Still walking like the ground owes you something, Namidi?”

Startled, Mama Efe gasped and turned around. Standing just beyond the bend in the path was a woman draped in a flowing indigo shawl. Her head was wrapped tightly, her arms crossed with quiet confidence. There was something powerful in her stance—like a storm cloud waiting to burst.

Namidi (low and bitter):

Kemi… I thought you were still rotting in Lagos.

Aunty Kemi (with a sly smile):

I was. But rot tends to follow the scent of corruption. And lately, this plantation stinks.

Mama Efe moved closer to Namidi, her heart pounding. She remembered Kemi—the orphan girl raised by her grandmother who used to sing to the cassava roots. The one who vanished after a terrible quarrel with Namidi ten years ago.

Aunty Kemi (stepping forward slowly):

I hear Shell’s hands are all over this soil now… and yours too. Digging, drilling, destroying. But I remember what this land looked like before you sold it piece by piece for your pride.

Namidi’s face twitched with fury. His hands curled into fists.

Namidi:

Careful, woman. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Aunty Kemi:

Oh, I know exactly what I’m talking about. And I know what Jackson saw the night the soil caught fire near the river. He ran to me, shaking like a leaf. He knows something, Namidi. And so do I.

Mama Efe (whispering):

What fire? What is she saying—?

Aunty Kemi:

Ask your husband.

The hissing from the plantation grew louder now, rising like a serpent hidden in the grass. The wind shifted and brought with it the sharp tang of oil.

Aunty Kemi (softly):

You can cover the land in poison, Namidi, but the earth remembers. And soon… the village will too.

She turned and began walking calmly toward the old path that led to the abandoned yam fields. Mama Efe stared after her, stunned.

Namidi didn’t move. His eyes remained fixed on the plantation, where the sky now looked just a little darker.
