In consequence the population began to house poor people. The mortality rate was high and polluted atmospheres had a bad effect, especially on children’s health. Cholera epidemics and tuberculosis were widespread. Some interventions from the Government were made but the changes were slow in coming and gradual in effect. Medicine also changed: professional organizations were founded and modern hospitals were built. Other services were also introduced, such as: water, gas and lighting; also places of entertainment, like public houses, music halls, parks and stadiums were created. Cities were kept under control by modern police forces that were introduced to resolve law’s problems.
