Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

As babies we trust the grownups that take care of us. Although we do not understand much, we know that we can trust the ones who feed and change us. The first stage of Erikson's development is from when we are zero years old to one and a half. If we do not trust the adults to take care of us that can lead to anxiety and fear.

Stage 2: Autonomy Vs. Shame

During stage two, we learn about autonomy which is learning to make our own decisions in our environments. This stage happens from one and a half to three years old. At this stage, children want to be able to do things themselves, such as dress themselves. If a child's choices are rejected, this could lead to shame, which would have a huge impact as the child ages. In the picture above, the child did a good job picking out her clothes, but even if she did not, she should still have the freedom to try.

Stage 3: Initiative Vs. Guilt

During the third stage, children learn how to take control and do things independently. This is called initiative. How can we expect children to be leaders if we do not teach them initiative? The other piece to this is guilt. I know many guilty adults, myself included. I do not know why I feel guilty, but I do. Children go through this age at ages three through five. This is also the transition from home to school. Children start preschool and have to start relying on themselves a little more.

Stage 4: Industry Vs. Inferiority

The fifth stage of Erikson's development is industry versus inferiority. In this case industry means to let the children learn to attempt more complex tasks. Inferiority means that children feel less than compared to others. This is a very important stage because it is elementary school age. This stage goes from ages five to twelve. Children are in school and learning new things including how to act properly and beginning to set a foundation for the rest of their school life. I would say that this is a critical stage from adults to help children.

Stage 5: Identity and Role Confusion

The sixth stage of Erikson's development is also very important. As we get older, it feels more comfortable to label everything and be put into boxes. Identity is really tricky because many people do not know who they are. This stage is from ages twelve to eighteen, so puberty into young adulthood. This is a very difficult time for children, they feel as though it determines the rest of their lives. Depending on where you live and what your home life looks like, role confusion can be very serious. We can be whatever we want to be, but school is a lot easier when you are who everyone else thinks you should be and that needs to change.

Stage 6: Intimacy Vs. Isolation

This stage of development is a big one because it is the major years of a person's prime. Intimacy is how we react to other people and how we let them see us. Isolation is being completely alone, most of the time because we choose to be. This stage happens between the ages of eighteen and forty. It really determines who we are and who we want to be.

Erikson's seventh stage of development is generativity versus stagnation, which happens between the ages of forty and sixty-five. In this stage we can contribute to the future society by having kids or helping in our communities to help make the other a better place. This is also the stage where if you let yourself, you can become stagnant. Stagnant means that you are okay to stay exactly where you are at with nothing going forward. This can be bad news for yourself or the world around you.

Stage 8: Ego Integrity Vs. Despair

This is the final stage of Erikson's stages of development. This stage happens in people 65 and older. Ego Integrity is the acceptance that this is the way life has to be and nothing can change. Along with that way of thinking comes despair, which is when nothing seems like it will ever get better. The two go hand-in-hand. People can change their lives, even at 65. We can all do our part to make the world a better place, that does not stop when you hit 60 years old. This stage is important because it is the final puzzle piece in development.
