Dawn (Science):
Activity: "Chains"
Stand up against the wall.
Line up and in sequence say the components of (e.g. photosynthesis equation). If say sth wrong, or hesitate, or use fillers (e.g. "um"), have to sit down. Means higher ability students are often out early too. Levels the playing field.
Students who are out become monitors (whether answers are right/wrong).
Winner gets POS.

Dominic (Maths)
Engagement = thinking.
Activity:
Usually a challenge in an empty lesson, but can be adapted to other lessons.
20+ MC questions on paper.
Project grid on board with instructions.
15min indiv time. 10min with partner, 10min as a class, fill in on board.
Answers revealed at the end. (coloured grid)

Engagement depends on quality of questions, which have to provoke thinking.

Maggie (Chinese):
Question: Some students lack confidence in selves in the subject, and give up; don't want to engage in the subject at all. How do we engage them? Especially when teaching grammar, which is necessarily dry.

Suggestion: something like IXL.com personalised learning platform?

Gladys (Chinese):
Tool: ClassDojo.
Motivates weaker students. Esp MYP students.
Positive and negative points for various behaviour, e.g. packing away, etc.
50 points = POS.
Students love it also because they can design the virtual classroom.
After 1 month, they know the rules.

Kenneth (English):
Marketplace activity.
Groups do different topics/tasks.
Then the classroom becomes a marketplace, and each group goes to different part of the room to set up their marketplace stall. 1 person from each group is the shopkeep, which has to explain/sell their inventory. Everyone else walks around shopping. At halfway point, shopkeepers swap, so that all students have a chance to go shopping.
End: students produce notes, which is their shopping cart of items they've purchased from the various stalls.

Anitha (IN):
In many subjects (science, maths, etc). Introduce concept around a game. e.g. GT: quiz about current events engages students. Students start to read the news in own time, to show off/compete.

Bev (Design):
2h lessons in practical subject are engaging. However, theory lessons require more.
Break up lesson. 1h prac, 1h theory.
Look for diff media to stimulate students.
Website: TeacherTube. uploaded by teachers, organised by subject and topic, and grade level.
Sometimes give specific video. Sometimes tell students to choose vid from a channel, based on different interests and readiness level. Some autonomy.

Yav (IN):
Science lesson example.
Introduce question, and then work on it as a practical puzzle, and explain using everyday things. Solving riddle/puzzle, rather than "learning science". Apply knowledge in new way.
