FMP Idea

For my FMP I started by investigating the idea of ‘Bespoke Brutalism’, as the concepts of ‘bespoke’ and ‘brutalism’ both fascinate me. Before I joined this Foundation, I wanted to become a fashion designer, so I did quite a bit of work-experience in a bespoke tailor shop, watching the processes of this delicate and complex profession. I have also been interested in brutalism for a long time as I love the rawness and complex minimalism brutalism exhibits. I thought the two ideas provided a strong contrast, and I wanted to explore what they would look like together. I liked the idea of the efficient and bold concept of brutalism being blended with very delicate and extravagant bespoke creations. However, after talking to my tutors, and thinking in detail about this idea in the context of my project, I realised the concept may be a little too specific and was not the exact idea I was aiming for – brutalism is a specific movement, but I was using it to represent an idea of mass production, so I refined my idea to ‘Bespoke vs Mass Production’. But again, I was not completely satisfied that this revised concept would be broad enough to allow sufficient investigation. On further reflection, I thought my FMP title should not be specifically design related, and so after careful consideration I decided a numerical approach would be better, and more specifically a ratio, ‘1:1000000’, which would allow me to explore the contrast I am interested in, using any elements of life.

Investigation

During my FMP I intend to further my investigatory skills. I want to specifically improve this assessment criteria because in my view it is one of the most important, and interesting, skills which I can develop. Any project I work on starts with investigation / research, as this process is what provides the basis to experiment and evolve the project, as I have experienced in my previous projects. For example, in my project ‘Walk this Way’ I was given a 3x3 meter space, which I had to redesign. So, to start the ‘Walk this Way’ project I spent half a day specifically investigating everything about the space, using observation and interviews. This period of investigation then led to the idea for my design, as I observed that people did not stop in this space, because it was dark and gloomy, and because they had nothing to interact with. I would not have found out about this pattern of behaviour by using online research, so using primary investigation was crucial for the development my work. However, I think I could have extended this primary investigative process further, for example by taking rubbings of surface textures and exploring what was thrown into the bins in the space. This extended investigation would have given me more ideas for textural redesign, and more of a detailed understanding of the type of people who walked through the space. Another project I have completed was called ‘Smithereens’. In this project I was not allowed to do any investigative research, and all I was given was a process which I had to experiment with. I found this approach more challenging as there was so many possibilities, so choosing what to do felt quite awkward and random due to the absence of investigation. If I had been able to use investigation / research then my approach would have felt, and been, more directed and would have led to a more conclusive outcome.

This is the Doc Martins factory in England that do there hand made shoes, and it would be interesting to visit this, and compare it with there Thailand factory that makes there cheaper shoes, to see the differences. I want to do this specific comparison as there is only one variable being changed so the comparison should be more effective
