What images seem the most compelling/powerful?

The two images below are ones that I found to be powerful and compelling. Both simple, with as little words possible but both still speak volumes. The image below that reads Silence = Death, was a sad reality. One that to many were ignoring. I think although this is straightforward it doesn’t hide the truth which was a crucial part of this movement. The push for society to realize the truth is something that a lot of these art works aimed to do. Another image I found moving was of the men holding signs that read “you don’t have to be Gay”. Again, these posters are simple, with no graphics on them. But they speak the truth to society, when society wanted to ignore it. What was also powerful about these signs was that society painted gay men as the ones who contracted AIDs. However, we know that women and men were both affected by this awful disease.

The image below made me mad the moment I read it; it also made me sad and disappointed in the U.S government. Since 2016, 675,000 people have died of AIDS in the U.S since the beginning of the crisis. I am not shocked but rather horrified that our government, knowing the severity of the AIDS crisis thought defense funds were needed over healthcare for its citizens. I think this are like the others I have discussed are a “hard pill to swallow” when it comes to the U.S history with AIDS. These posters bring out the truth and educate those who may not know of the awful facts and realities that surround the movement. The images are examples of how the U.S government were responsible for the deaths of thousands. The United States government turned its back on its citizens when they needed leadership and aid. I think the question that is posed on the right of one of the images makes viewers stop and think. If our government spent money on defense but is ignoring the needs of its own people, is it a civil war? If I were to answer this question I would say yes.

What images are most disturbing to you?

The above image on the right is another one piece of art work I found disturbing. This image shows a man bent down, naked and seeming to be positioned for anal sex. Just like my reasoning for the image I found “inappropriate”, I feel like these images are rarely out for public viewing. I could only imagen how these two images may have made mothers or young children feel. However, I believe that this image was needed in spreading awareness for gay rights and ending homophobia. The image although graphic is eye catching making anyone who saw it stop and read it. Almost all of the art created during the AIDs movement was thought through; what statement will grab the attention of passer byers? Etc. The poster served as a message board to spread awareness, although disturbing to some, it gained the attention for AIDs that was needed.

When I first began to look through the Gran Fury ACT UP art I was shocked at how vaguer some of the images were. The artwork below is a picture of an erect penis, an image rarely used in the public. Maybe this is why I find it so inappropriate. To have these images posted around in public places, where children could see them is another reason why I feel like some images were too graphic to use in artwork.

Why was art so fundamental to this movement? What was the purpose? Why do you think ACT UP activists used these images?

I think art can provoke emotions from its viewers; we have seen this happen in museums across the world daily. The art work used by ACT UP activists provoked multiple emotions including anger, sadness, discomfort and power. All these emotions were crucial in the movement. I believe these emotions provoked action which resulted in change. These emotions were experienced by the entire class for this project so I can only imagine how seeing multiple images a day could provoke even stronger emotions. In Gene Sharps list of tactics there is one that focuses on symbols. One image in particular "Silence=Death" became a very popular and recognizable work of art throughout this movement. Art work was able to bring to light the unjust treatment and promote change through a platform that was never used before. Due to artwork being posted everywhere, I also believe it got more individuals involved and educated. The AIDs movement was the first to show the strong influence art work could have for future movements.

A bride history of protest art from the 1940s until now:

Just like I mentioned below art work can create strong emotions in its viewers. The images lined up with brief descriptions next to each one are important in teaching others the worlds history. Each image deserves to be recognized because it was influential and important to its particular movement. Images like the ones choosen created knowledge and encouraged others to get involved, similar to the AIDs movements art work. One image that spoke to me was the artwork created out of firehoses. This piece of art is a reminder of the cruel use of a firehose during the civil rights movement. Just like artwork is meant to stir up emotions, I think it should also be used to remind viewers. Its important to never let movements die and artwork is one way to allow these movements to live on.

Artwork has been used recently in movements like the Women's March and Anti-Trump rallies through signs. Modern technology like social media platforms have allowed these signs to gain popularity. It seems like society actually looks forward each year to compare the creativity of signs at these protests. These posters sometimes use simple/ true phrases, witty phrases or images. Just like how artwork evokes emotions its also an outlet for emotions. The signs we have seen at Anti-Trump rallies are outcomes of individuals who feel like the President is not representing their needs. I took the liberty to google some artwork that has been created since President Trump took office. The above image is one that I feel embodies why artwork is used during protests. It serves to bring emotions, knowledge and ensures that thinks are not forgotten.
