1. What is the traditional festival you want to introduce?

The traditional festival I would like to introduce is “Tiān Chuān Rì” (天穿日), also known as “The Day the Sky Broke.” This festival is celebrated primarily in southern China, especially among the Hakka people. It is observed on the 20th day of the first lunar month.

2. What do people do during this traditional festival?

On Tiān Chuān Rì, people commemorate the legend of Nüwa, the goddess who mended the sky after it broke. Traditional activities include offering sacrifices to Nüwa, making dumplings, and eating foods like rice cakes and fried dough to symbolize patching the sky. Some families also avoid using knives and tools, believing that rest and simplicity help avoid bad luck.

3. Do you enjoy this traditional festival? Why? Why not?

I find this festival fascinating because of its mythological origins and the deep cultural connection it represents. It’s a unique way to honor ancient beliefs about the cosmos and the goddess Nüwa. Although I don’t celebrate it personally, I appreciate the symbolism and the sense of community it fosters among those who observe it.

What is the traditional festival you want to introduce?

The festival I like to introduce is called Mid-Autumn Festival.(中秋節）Normally we celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival on August 15 in lunar calendar.

According to historical poems, people go on a full moon watching as a traditional event since 770 BCE. But it was until the Yuan empire that people celebrate this festival every year. The story said that when the Yuan people tried to started a revolution to the Mongolia people, they stuffed little pieces of paper inside mooncakes as signals, after all the army received the signals, they attack the Mongolia army in the midnight and won the war in the end. After that every mid-autumn festival, people will give mooncakes to friends or families as blessing. Although, the way Taiwanese nowadays celebrate this festival is totally different from the Yuan empire.

What do people do during this traditional festival?

Usually, people visit their friend, clients and families, and eat pomelos, moon cakes or go on a full moon watching. But nowadays , a must do event replaced the tradition- Barbecue. As I remember, there was an advertising by a soy sauce brand decades ago said that people like to visit their families, and barbecue outside their home, accompanied by full moon. This ad truly change the way Taiwanese celebrate the festival. Also, visit families is not the first priority anymore, young people tend to celebrate with their friends, high school classmates. In addition to this the sales of mooncakes still increasing every year, usually everyone have to eat moon cakes for a full week, and the calories of one mooncake is equal to a bowl of rice, which is really high.

Do you enjoy this traditional festival? Why? Why not?

When I was a kid, I really enjoy this festival, because I like barbecue, also I can play some traditional Chinese games such as Mahjong or dices with little gambling with my families.

On the other hand, when I was doing part time job in restaurant or hospitality industry, Mid-Autumn Festival was like nightmare, because all the staff don't have time to take a rest, they need to face hundreds of customers for a whole day(sometimes 3 or 4 days if there are continuous holidays on some years), and I don't have time to stay with my families, which was really disappointed.

I still like mooncakes and barbecue, but working on Mid-Autumn Festival? NO WAY.

What is the traditional festival you want to introduce?

The traditional festival I want to introduce is Hari Raya Aidilfitri, known as Eid al-Fitr, is a Malay people festival in Malaysia. It is a New Year celebrated by Muslims because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-dusk fasting of Ramadan. It is falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar, it usually falls on March.

What do people do during this traditional festival?

They will have family gathering. After prayers, people gather with family members to celebrate, they often traveling cities back to their hometowns, in Malay we say "balik kampung".

After the month of fasting during Ramadan, Hari Raya is a time of feasting and celebration. They usually will prepare some very special traditional Malay dishes, such as

Ketupat (compressed rice cake), it is similar to Chinese sticky rice dumpling.

Rendang (slow-cooked meat in a rich coconut milk and spice mixture)

Satay (grilled skewered meats)

Lemang (glutinous rice cooked in bamboo)

Kuih (traditional sweet treats and cookies)

These dishes are shared with their family, neighbours, symbolizing abundance and gratitude.

They will also be visiting relatives and neighbours, known as open houses. People will invite friends, neighbours, and even strangers to visit their homes. Visitors are welcomed warmly and offered food, drinks and sweets.

On Hari Raya, people often wear new clothes or traditional attire. For men, this might include the "baju melayu" (a traditional Malay outfit), paired with a "songkok" (a black cap), while women might wear the "baju Kurung" or "baju Kebaya" (traditional Malay outfit for women).

They will also give and receive Duit Raya (Hari Raya Money). It is similar to the giving of red envelopes during Chinese New Year. Malay people often placed in green envolopes and symbolizes blessings and goodwill. It is reflecting the spirits of charity and kindness.

Do you enjoy this traditional festival? Why? Why not?

Yes, I do.

Today has been a day filled with gratitude and joy, leaving my heart full of happiness and contentment.

I’m grateful for my friend’s invitation, which gave me the chance to visit Yulao Scenic Viewpoint—a place surrounded by natural beauty and tranquility. Walking through the forest, breathing in the fresh phytoncides, and feeling the gentle breeze on my face felt like a cleansing experience for both body and soul. Standing at the viewpoint, gazing at the endless scenery, I forgot all the worries of daily life and simply enjoyed the beauty of the moment.

A special thanks goes to the delicious stinky tofu I had today. Its crispy texture and unique aroma were a delightful treat for my taste buds. I also captured many wonderful moments in photos, preserving today’s smiles and scenery.

As someone who hasn’t gone on a trip or truly relaxed in a long time, today was undoubtedly a rare day of unwinding. I’m grateful for the small yet beautiful things in life, for my friend’s company, and for myself for stepping out of my comfort zone to embrace this day of nature and joy. I hope there will be more days like this in the future, bringing balance and healing to my mind and body.

Today, my heart is overflowing with gratitude.
