         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Influence-<br></strong>He was the chief editor and author of the encyclopedia from 1774-1772. His purpose for writing them was "to change the general way of thinking" and to elaborate on topics such as government, philosophy, and religion. He was born into a Christian family but later became an atheist. The Roman catholic church opposed him because of his writing "Essay on the Merits of Virtue" which was ordered to be burned in public. He later spent three months in prison because of his work.</div>]]></description>
