I wouldn't love to do the final project as voice over recorded powerpoint slide show. I plan to go character bye character and talking about how the roles gender and sexuality play in their choices from a sociological perspective. I would love to have 2-3 choices each character made analyzed.

1. Pick which characters I will be analyzing and weather or not I will just be using the female identifying characters 2. Pick each of their 2-3 decisions I will be analyzing 3. Put all the info into the slide show with pictures 4. Record my audio, layer it over top, and submit.

Summary:

Sexuality is shaped by socialization, where individuals learn society’s norms and values. In the U.S. and Western cultures, heteronormativity treats heterosexual relationships as normal, while non-heterosexual relationships are often seen as abnormal. Three main forces that teach people about sexual behavior are religion, law, and media. Religion gives moral rules for sexual behavior, like promoting abstinence. The law sets boundaries, such as outlawing prostitution and rape, and it has influenced views on homosexuality. Media, including TV and pornography, spreads ideas about acceptable sexual behavior. However, sexual norms vary across time and cultures, such as in Ancient Greece, where sexuality was viewed differently.

Connection:
In Sex and the City, each character’s decisions reflect societal norms about sexuality. Carrie struggles with heteronormativity in her on-and-off relationship with Mr. Big, questioning if her desire for commitment fits the conventional mold of romance. Samantha rejects societal norms entirely, embracing her sexual freedom and non-monogamy, defying the idea that women must conform to traditional heterosexual relationships. Miranda, a career-driven woman, battles the pressure to balance independence with her desire for companionship, often feeling conflicted about societal expectations of women. Charlotte, the most traditional, fully embraces heteronormativity, seeking marriage and children, which she views as the ultimate fulfillment. Each woman’s choices reflect how societal views on sexuality influence their personal lives, even as they navigate their own paths.

Summary:

The section on gender socialization from Essentials of Sociology Chapter 9 feels really applicable to my final project. It explains how society teaches individuals gender roles through interactions with family, peers, and institutions like schools and media. These social interactions begin early, shaping how children perceive gender norms and expectations. Babies for instance are treated differently based on their perceived gender. The text also discusses the social construction of gender, arguing that gender differences are largely learned rather than biologically determined. People “do gender” by behaving in ways that align with societal expectations of masculinity or femininity, which influences everything from personal relationships to workplace dynamics. This system reinforces traditional gender roles, but it can also be challenged.

Connection:

In Sex and the City, gender socialization, the process by which individuals learn societal norms associated with their gender, plays a crucial role in shaping the characters’ decisions. For instance, Charlotte’s choice to leave her career in favor of traditional domesticity reflects her internalized belief in the ideal of a “perfect wife,” a role she was socialized to value through her upper-class upbringing. Similarly, Samantha’s unapologetic pursuit of casual sex challenges the gendered expectation of female modesty, which she consciously rejects. Miranda’s conflict between career and motherhood highlights the tension between professional ambition and societal expectations of nurturing. At the same time, Carrie’s romantic dilemmas often explore the pressures placed on women to seek fulfillment through relationships.
