Mary Poppins was made into a film/musical based on the first four books in the series by Walt Disney Productions in 1964. The process of planning the film and composing the songs took about two years. The songs in the film are by the Sherman Brothers. Mary Poppins is played by British actress Julie Andrews. Disney cast Dick Van Dyke in the role of Bert, while Banks children were played by Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber. The movie takes place in the year 1910. The film received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture with Julie Andrews winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Mary Poppins. The film won an additional four Oscars for Best Original Song, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score. Julie Andrew was an amazing singer when she was starring in Mary Poppins, but unfortunately she developed hoarseness in her voice, in 1997. She underwent surgery to remove nodules from her throat. This movie is significant because she emerged from the surgery with permanent damage that destroyed her singing and gave a rasp to her speaking voice. She then sued the doctor who had performed this surgery on her. The surgery ended her singing career.

The Sound of Music came out in 1965, and is an American musical drama film. It was produced and directed by Robert Wise, and is starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. “It is based on the real life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world's best-known concert groups in the era preceding World War II. Julie Andrews plays the role of Maria, the tomboyish postulant at an Austrian abbey who becomes a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain with seven children, and brings a new love of life and music into the home.” The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards. Most for Best Picture and Best Director. It also received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress, the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Musical. A fun fact, Christopher Plummer, who played the father of the Von Trapp family children, described his role as "so awful and sentimental and gooey" He found all aspects of making the film, except working with Julie Andrews, unpleasant. He was the first winner of Canada's Genie Award, for Best Actor in Murder by Decree (1980) and has received three other Genie nominations. Christopher Plummer has won two Tony Awards and two Emmy Awards in the United States, and Great Britain's Evening Standard Awards. The significance of the movie was to show the American people how hard times were for the people in Austria and countries
nearby in the years following World War 2.

Bill Russell - Born in Monroe, Louisiana in 1934. West Monroe was a highly segregated place, and the Russell's family often struggled with racism in their daily lives. Russell's father moved the family out of Louisiana when Russell was eight years old and settled them in Oakland, California. While there the family fell into poverty, and Russell spent his childhood living in public housing projects. In college, Russell realized that basketball was his one chance to escape poverty and racism. He became known for his strong defense and shot-blocking skills, once denying 13 shots in a game. At the start of the 1957-58 season, the Celtics won 14 straight games, and continued to succeed. Russell averaged 16.6 points per game and a league-record average of 22.45 rebounds per game. Led Celtics to 11 championships in his 13 year career. Won a championship in his first year with NBA. Still is the most decorated NBA player today. Bill Russell was significant because despite his childhood of racism, poverty, and inequality in sports, Bill Russell endured through it all and managed to become incredibly accomplished in sports, and the NBA.

Family moved to Cleveland and soon began skating immediately on the advice of her father. Won five U.S. titles, and three World titles. Participated in 1968 Olympics and won a gold medal for the U.S. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. Successfully underwent surgery and chemotherapy to cure it. Peggy Fleming was significant. Her award in 1968 was singularly important for the American athletes and the nation as a whole, for this was the only gold medal that the U.S. Olympic team won in the 1968 Winter Games. It signaled a return to American dominance in the sport of women's figure skating following the tragedy of the 1961 plane crash.
