         <description><![CDATA[<div>From all the new land gained from the Mexican Cession, southerners wanted to keep slaves, but the north didn't want to. Southerners had proposed to split America to slavery and non-slavery land, but the Congress denied it. As California was applied to become apart of the union southerners don't like it but northerners were welcome to it. This was because California was a free state, and the south thought it would unbalance the union.</div>]]></description>

The <strong>Compromise of 1850</strong> was to keep a balance between the number of slave states and the number of free states in the Union. It also<strong> Missouri</strong> to become a slave state at the same time. Maine had also entered in the union as a free state. With the new states in the union, maintained a balance in free and slave states.</div>]]></description>
