Unlike other sci fi shows, Next Generation and TOS openly touch on many of the concerns and questions we have as human beings in an imperfect world. Even later series like Voyager (which I also enjoyed, though I wish they had kept Janeway's character consistent) touched on it somewhat. The new films I like, but not so much as the television series.
