I have been struggling lately with the design of homework tasks for my Anatomical Kinesiology class. I assign homework that I expect students to complete, and I find that most of the students in class do. But i am wondering about the learning impact of homework tasks. Homework can play many roles in the learning process. You can use it to have students prepare for a class session, help them consolidate learning following a class session, have them start thinking about problems and issues, and have them complete lead-up problems that scaffold with the activities planned in class. One of the most difficult things about designing homework assignments is "calibrating" the tasks such that they connect with the students' level of understanding and skill, and do a bit more than just collecting facts, actually engaging the mind in substantive thought processes. I want the homework i design to help students establish problem solving as a "habit of mind" as Larry called it, and not disengage because the tasks appears beyond their capabilities.
