The Performative Media module began with an opportunity to explore how media and technology can transform spaces into immersive experiences. In this first assignment, our task was to identify a subject for projection mapping, a choice that would anchor our creative journey. I chose Monumen Palagan Ambarawa for its historical significance and potential as a storytelling medium.

Choosing the Subject

Selecting Ambarawa's monument was personal yet purposeful. As an Indonesian, I wanted to spotlight a lesser-known story from my homeland. The monument’s large, rectangular structure provided an ideal canvas for projection mapping. During the initial research, I delved into the monument’s history, uncovering stories of resilience and unity during the Ambarawa War. This process was not only enriching but also deepened my appreciation for the historical events I aimed to narrate.

Research and Presentation

The assignment’s requirements included presenting the chosen subject and its potential for interactive design. Crafting the slides allowed me to hone my skills in structuring ideas visually and narratively. Sharing the presentation with my peers was both nerve-wracking and rewarding; their feedback helped refine my approach. Professor Khairul Yusri Zamri’s openness to diverse software choices encouraged me to think creatively and experiment freely, fostering a collaborative and innovative atmosphere in class.

Challenges and Insights

A challenge I encountered was deciding how to balance the monument’s historical gravity with an engaging visual narrative. It was tempting to lean heavily on historical details, but I realized that an abstract approach would better capture the audience’s attention. This realization highlighted the importance of audience perspective in media design—a key takeaway I will carry forward.

Growth and Reflection

This assignment underscored the importance of storytelling in performative media. I learned to view a physical space not just as a structure but as a medium capable of evoking emotion and dialogue. Additionally, presenting my work in class helped improve my confidence and ability to communicate ideas effectively.

Reflective Writing for Assignment 2: Exploring Abstract Interactions in Performative Media

The second assignment in the Performative Media module allowed us to build upon the foundational ideas presented in the first assignment. This phase required creating a storyboard and mock-up to visualize the chosen concept. Continuing with the theme of Monumen Palagan Ambarawa, I focused on developing a compelling narrative around the Ambarawa War to enhance its historical value.

Storyboard Creation: A Visual Journey

This assignment was a transformative step in bringing my ideas to life. Moving beyond research, I translated the monument’s story into a sequence of visuals and interactions. The process began with designing a 3D model of the monument, which helped me understand its spatial dynamics and how projection mapping could highlight its features.

The storyboard detailed the war narrative in three acts:

Prologue: Setting the tense atmosphere of post-war Indonesia.

Conflict: Visualizing the courage and sacrifice during the Ambarawa War.

Legacy: Honoring the fighters and the unity they achieved.

Creating the storyboard was a deeply engaging experience. I enjoyed balancing historical accuracy with creative abstraction, ensuring that the visuals resonated emotionally without overwhelming the audience.

Challenges in Abstract Representation

One of the significant challenges I faced was designing abstract visuals that effectively conveyed historical events. Unlike literal representations, abstract elements require careful planning to ensure they evoke the intended emotions. For example, I used dynamic lighting and transitions to simulate the intensity of battle scenes while maintaining a sense of cohesion with the monument’s architecture.

Another hurdle was sequencing the narrative within the constraints of projection mapping. I had to consider the flow of visuals and how each segment would interact with the monument’s surface. This required multiple iterations and feedback sessions, which were invaluable in refining my approach.

Professor and Peer Support

Professor Khairul’s guidance was instrumental in this phase. His expertise in media and openness to various tools allowed me to explore techniques freely. Class discussions with peers also helped shape the final storyboard. Their diverse perspectives encouraged me to experiment with styles and rethink certain design choices, making the final product more dynamic.

Insights and Personal Growth

This assignment deepened my understanding of visual storytelling and its role in performative media. I discovered the power of storyboarding as a planning tool, which not only organizes ideas but also serves as a visual language to communicate with collaborators. Furthermore, the iterative process of creating and revising taught me the value of flexibility and the importance of constructive feedback.

The storyboard became more than a blueprint—it was a way to test and refine how I could connect the audience to the story of Ambarawa. This phase also reinforced my belief in the importance of combining technical skills with creative thinking, a balance that is essential for success in media design.

The final assignment of the Performative Media module was the culmination of our work, where concepts and designs transformed into a tangible experience. This phase required us to produce the actual video mapping project using HeavyM software. For me, it was the moment to bring the story of Monumen Palagan Ambarawa to life in a digital and performative medium.

The Execution: From Vision to Reality

Having developed a clear storyboard and 3D mock-up in the previous phase, I began with software experimentation. HeavyM was entirely new to me, and the learning curve was steep. I relied heavily on YouTube tutorials, online resources, and trial-and-error sessions to familiarize myself with its interface and capabilities. The process involved:

Tracing and Masking: Mapping the monument’s surface to create distinct zones for visuals.

Combining Media: Integrating the storyboard visuals, animations, and voiceover narration to craft a cohesive sequence.

Audio Design: Designing the soundscape separately, using other software, and merging it seamlessly within HeavyM.

The Narrative Expansion

In this phase, I extended the story presented in Assignment 2. The additional narrative elements included:

A more detailed portrayal of the Ambarawa War, focusing on the courage and sacrifices of the fighters.

Moments of reflection, highlighting the monument’s symbolism in modern Indonesia.

Emotional peaks, driven by the interplay of visuals, music, and voiceover.

The voiceover acted as a storytelling anchor, guiding the audience through the visuals while connecting them emotionally to the historical events. Combining these elements to tell the story felt immensely satisfying, as each piece enhanced the overall impact.

Challenges and Solutions

The biggest challenge was managing the complexity of layering visuals, audio, and spatial mapping. HeavyM required precise coordination to ensure the visuals aligned perfectly with the monument’s structure. This often meant revisiting the storyboard and making adjustments to the animations.

Another difficulty was maintaining a balance between creativity and historical sensitivity. While the project was artistic, it needed to respect the gravity of the events being depicted. Consulting with peers and revisiting my research ensured the narrative stayed grounded.

A Rewarding Experience

Seeing the final projection was an unforgettable moment. Watching the Monumen Palagan Ambarawa illuminated with the story of its legacy felt like a tribute to history, one that I had the privilege of creating. The entire process—from initial concepts to the final display—was a testament to the potential of performative media to engage, educate, and inspire.

Learning and Growth

This assignment solidified my skills in digital media production and project management. I learned the value of meticulous planning, the importance of adapting to new tools, and the necessity of perseverance when faced with challenges. Beyond technical skills, I gained a deeper appreciation for storytelling in digital media, realizing how a well-crafted narrative can transform a physical space into an immersive experience.

Furthermore, the project taught me to embrace the iterative nature of creative work. Each revision brought the narrative closer to its intended impact, and the feedback from Professor Khairul and my peers was invaluable. These lessons will undoubtedly guide me in future endeavors, both academically and professionally.
