This helped me connect important concepts in building a general plan for the clip. This map also helped me highlight and list out possible activities to add on in order to make the video more meaningful and engaging.

Was it difficult to explore your product so deeply?

It was not easy to explore the product deeply but it is a great activity to help me develop a detailed plan to deliver main messages to customers. I already started this business with my partner a month ago, that is why is hard to change my first impression and expectation for this service and the video. I tried to eliminate "interesting" but unrealistic ideas while brainstorming for this project. The creativity may not reach full potential but I think it is better to self-access and wonder which ideas can be implemented based on my current digital media skills. A complicated idea sometimes is not a good start.

Did you come up with any new ideas that will help you think differently about planning your promo clip?

I did come up with a more logical way to generate ideas for the clip by starting from the customer's perspective rather than a business owner. I think it may be productive to create more relevant stories if I put myself into customers' shoes and open my eyes wider to see how I can attract a new customer who wants to order a digital illustration service. If I were them, what would I like to know when watching a promotional video? What could be the main factors to trigger their curiosity about this brand? What elements would contribute to better attracting their attention? What colours, what messages, what theme, what tone, what methods, what techniques do I need to focus while building a "doable" plan for this promotional video.

Who are you going to target with your promotional video?
+ Potential customers - Major audience: millennials, girls/woman, age: 10 -30, social media users, tech-savvy | Minor audience: book companies, children book publishers, boys/men.
+ Current customers - Already used the products, loyal customers, loyal followers on Instagram)
+ Other artists - social media users, traditional and modern style illustrators

Examples of how your topic has been promoted previously
There are many self-employed artists using art platforms (JuriedArtServices.com) or (MyArtSpace.com) to promote their products or artwork. They also uploaded their self-created promotional video on Youtube or Instagram with unique styles to reach their target audience. Most of them attempt to deliver their message and unique style via their artwork due to the nature of the industry. If you want people to like and purchase your artwork, you need to convince them your style is appealing and unique. The main purpose of this promotional video is to reach the target audience, let them see how digital artwork at ROY THE ART is designed, display some samples and deliver our main message: "We can create unique illustrations for you". It is hard to find similar promotional videos for this type of service as most of the artists use online platforms to promote themselves.

Different perspectives.
In order to make my promotional video unique, I decided to choose our own artwork in the video. I want to use Roy The Art's unique style to promote for the service as because custom digital illustrations are what we want to let viewers "taste" before they decide to choose us.
Instead of brainstorming other complex creative ideas, I tried to focus on drawing 4 banner photos to utilise for my website and video. I will use some slow-motion scenes to highlight the way the artist at ROY THE ART can impress the audience and leave them wanting to see more.

Audiovisual styles? Strategies?
Background music is one of the most important factors to make the video more appealing and create an emotional connection with the audience. In the video, I want to use music and visual effects as the main approaches to deliver our message. The human voice is used moderately as I want to focus on the intro and outro audio, which can set the tone and bring a positive feeling for viewers after watching the video. Music will be a crucial element that I need to spend more time to pick up the right one. It depends on the target audience, but I think the music should be broadly appealing. I will not choose music with heavy or complex melodies as they may influence the quality and mood of the video.

I have chosen some songs that I may consider to use for the video:
Still on by Ziv Moran
https://artlist.io/song/11661/still-on
Incandescent with Passon by Cody Martin
https://artlist.io/song/8142/incandescent-with-passion
Make My Love Your Home by The Days
https://artlist.io/song/13413/make-my-love-your-home
Kindness Courage by Kolby Knickerbocker
https://artlist.io/song/11448/kindness-courage

Coleman, C 2017, Visual Experiences : A Concise Guide to Digital Interface Design, CRC Press LLC, London.
This book shows me how to create better visual digital experiences for my potential customers. The interesting point when reading this book is that it teaches me from sketching step to the final prototype. A lot of examples and methods are introduced throughout the book to help me understand fundamental theories of design to apply to this project.

David D, Sandra S & Abbiee V 2017, Graphic Design School: The Principles and Practice of Graphic Design, John Wiley & Sons.
The book helps me understand the principles of good graphic design, particularly in a digital style. From the textbook, I also learned how to apply visual design for my promotional video based on the target audience and my personal style in drawing and illustrating. In addition, I have better understandings about the basic of typography, colour, and composition, which are important factors when designing a commercial website.

Digital Marketing Agency, Lists 4 Components of an Attention-Grabbing Digital Ad 2016, PR Newswire, p. PR Newswire, Oct 7, 2016.
This article gives useful tips for grabbing the viewers' attention. From this text, I was able to determine which elements are important to capture my audience and convince them to watch the whole video. I understood that the average attention span is around eight to nine seconds long. In other words, I only have five seconds to get my audience hooked. Additionally, the article highlights the importance of evoking emotion, and the use of compelling photography and music. The article explains that photos do help to elicit an emotional response and support the message to be conveyed quickly. This is also one of the main points that I need to pay more attention to make a visual impact and reach more relevant audience.

Millerson, G., & Owens, J 2008, Video production handbook, 4th ed., Focal Press, Boston.
I believe that if anyone wants to learn how to present the video professionally or how to influence the audience responds, they should read this book. The author focuses on each step in the full production process from the initial idea to the final stage. In chapter 5, I have learned how to write the script for a video, how to create a style while preparing the full transcript. Chapter 3 is also amazing as the author pointed out crucial problems in creating a video such as the problem of familiarity, the problem of quality and problem of communication.

Pelet, J-E, Conway, CM, Papadopoulou, P, Limayem, M, Benghozi, P-J, Krob, D & Rowe, F 2013, 'Chromatic Scales on Our Eyes: How User Trust in a Website Can Be Altered by Color via Emotion’, in Digital Enterprise Design and Management 2013: Proceedings of the First International Conference on Digital Enterprise Design and Management DED&M 2013, 2013th edn, vol. 205, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Berlin, Heidelberg, pp. 111–121.
The article demonstrates clearly that color is a central factor in the design of the website. Understanding how to choose colour for a web page can enhance positive emotional reactions and customer's willing-to-pay. Additionally, the author highlights that colour can lead to higher trust levels when arousal states are present at a high level.

Teague, J., Cranford Teague, J., & Boss, S 2016, New Web Typography : Create a Visual Hierarchy with Responsive Web Design, Independence: CRC Press LLC.
This book strongly demonstrates how to effectively utilise different typefaces and avoid using boring typography to achieve visually appealing website/video. A visual hierarchy is also highlighted in this book through valuable experiences from the author. Fonts should be carefully considered to gain more aesthetical presentation.

The Business Owner 2010, Avoid these common website mistakes, D.L, Perkins, Mar.-Apr. 2010, p. 10+. Accessed 16 July 2019.
This article helps me understand the common mistakes that I need to avoid when designing the website. He explains the importance of visual design including colours, typefaces, pictures, and videos while building a commercial website. He also focuses on how to use a picture to deliver the message of the webpage. He recommends using interesting and appealing photos on the website instead of plain, boring text. Plenty of white space is also a good way to avoid a crowded look and feel.

Watkinson, J 2008, The art of digital video, 4th ed., Focal Press, Amsterdam.

This book provides clear and concise definitions and principles related to digital video. I also learned basic concepts about lighting, picture size, colour, brightness and contrast. Additionally, I learned the importance of the background as it may influence the chosen style for the video. It is necessary to determine what type of background can affect points used to communicate to the audience.

Wrigley C & Straker K 2019, Affected: Emotionally Engaging Customers in the Digital Age, John Wiley & Sons.
Colour does influence customer perception of products and brands, especially when it comes to the first impression. Visual aesthetics can appeal to customers' emotions. Our service is about art, so we understand that emotional connection is essential for us to sell the products. In addition, the article also highlights how visual factors heavily influences the way consumers react and make a purchase.

'Writing a Video Treatment' 2000, Canadian Musician, vol. 12, no.3, pp. 12-12.
This article provides readers with many useful tips to write a video treatment. The author recommends me to listen the background music while writing the treatment and try to envision the feelings I get from the song. I also learned how to write different types of treatment for various style of video (whether the video is a commercial clip, a performance, a self-promotional video). In addition, the book highlights the importance of setting a suitable budget while customizing the video.

Some viewers can feel curious as they don't know how their portrait may look like in Roy The Art's style. They may start with a neutral emotion as they do not have any information about the service, but later they can feel happy, admirable, trustful and then they smile. In order to do that, I believe the message throughout the video should be clear with a logical structure, bonus good lighting, good music, etc.

Which colours best represent these emotions? Why?
I want to use blue and orange to create a good color contrast for my website and promotional video. I want to use an attention-grabbing combination of blue tones that range from midnight blue and dark olive green to dark orange and gold. The reason is that orange/gold most often contains a warm tone, whereas its opposite color (blue) can enhance the most contrast. Because I use vivid colours for most of the illustration, I decided to use black and white for the logo, font colour and other elements of my website/video to highlight the artwork. I try to stay away from overly stylized color choices and focus on modern style to appeal to the audience. For the video, I will try to lead viewer focus on the products, so I decided to use the same strategy: black and white for logo, font, transcript, slogan to highlight colorful artwork.

I intentionally pick up both cool and warm sets of analogous colours to demonstrate the contrast of temperature and create a more sophisticated relationship between these colours. Each analogous colour scheme can create a great match and become very pleasing to the human eye.

Analogous set 1: Blue/ Green/Light Green (#40678B | #475926 | #878B56)
Analogous set 2: Yellow/Light Orange/ Orange (#CFD954 | #F3C28B | #A66158)

I like the way they set up the footage, and how to use slow motion to focus on his project (0:05 -0:15). The colours are used beautifully and effectively to demonstrate the artist's style. The music is inspirational too. After watching the video, I do want to click on the website and find more about the artist's information.

I am considering to use this technique to display Roy The Art's work. Presenting the information in this way may help the audience easily understand the service. This video is also a good demonstration of changing viewers' emotions effectively and professionally.

The video starts with a scene of ROY THE ART's studio in a beautiful and bright morning with a peaceful and uplifting music background.
The screen swipes to reveal the artist. He wears a casual outfit, walks to the work desk, turns on the laptop, sits down, and starts a day at his work desk. He grabs an Apple pencil, touches the iPad screen, looks at what he did yesterday and starts to continue his work. The sunlight from the window keeps the office warm and energetic. While he is drawing, he pays attention to each detail of the artwork and enjoys every single moment he works in the office.
He puts the pencil down, looks up, and turns around, looks at the camera. He smiles and greats the audience. "Hello, my name is [artist's name]. Welcome to Roy The Art". He keeps smiling while the logo appears.
The screen swipes to a new scene. Five to six outstanding photos of his artwork start to appear. The colours and the detail of his artwork are focused and highlighted by using close up shots and adjusting the angle of view. The name of the client or a brief description of each artwork is displayed along the bottom of the photo (for example: a commission for @harrison2705). The hashtags can be used to let the audience recognise the brand name.
The screen swipes to a scene in which the artist is discussing with his client. Two people are talking about work in happy and comfortable behaviour. The artist explains and provides advice on the artwork. The client nods his head when listening to the artist. They both smiles when the final decision is made.
The screen swipes to another scene. The client gives the artwork to his girlfriend on her birthday. She is very surprised and emotional with the gift. She almost cries and hugs the client. They look extremely happy.
The screen swipes to the artist's scene in which he feels happy too when creating unforgettable moments for customers.
The screen cuts to white. The ROY THE ART logo appears with the slogan line "We create unique moments... FOR YOU"

First entry
The unit and assignments sound interesting when I finally can learn how to develop a promotional video for my business. I'm super eager to learn new techniques, how to use modern applications and creative concepts to create a unique clip with interesting ideas. I always dream about a day when I can produce a video for myself or my business by using my digital skills. I feel a little bit uncertain, of course, because I am not sure whether the audience will accept and like the video. I want to promote for a custom digital illustration service that my partner and I are running. We offer hand drawing artworks and customise products for customers. This may be a great time for me to invest time and effort in conducting thorough research on the industry and the service.
