Expert Analyst Projections

-Stock

We will highlight future analyst predictions directly beneath the space that shows the value of the stock held. This will allow users to focus on future earnings with the stock and separate the past performance from the current, intrinsic value of their investment.

-Sector

Below the analyst projection for the stock itself, we will provide an analyst projection for the sector that the stock is a part of. This will provide even more information about the future of the stock and again frame the investment in terms of future value instead of judging it against past performance.

Alternative Stock Choices

Not only will our interface show the projections for the stock and the sector, but it will also show the performance of similar stocks within the sector. It will also make it very simple for these small-time investors to swap their funds from one stock over to another which will be more highly rated by expert analysts. In this way, investors can compare the outlook for their stock with similar stocks within the same industry and choose whichever they believe is best. This

True Value

Instead of just the value of the investment seen in currency, users can input their salary and see how many hours of work the value of the stock equals. This small icon will allow people to break their mental accounts and understand the value of their portfolio in terms of their own working hours.

Mental Accounting
Mental accounting refers to the mental accounts that people use in order to organize their financial activities which often leads to them giving the same amount of money different values depending on the planned use. This is especially important in personal investment strategies as investors do not place the same value on the money in their investment portfolios as the money being held in bank accounts and for everyday spending. We will be counteracting the effects of mental accounting by comparing the value of the investment to other similar stocks and to the value in terms of worked hours by the individual.

Loss Aversion
Loss aversion is the observation that human beings experience losses asymmetrically more severely than equivalent gains. This overwhelming fear of loss can cause investors to behave irrationally and make bad decisions, such as holding onto a stock for too long or too little time. Our idea will combat this loss aversion by reminding investors of the present value of their holdings instead of focusing on the losses that they have already accrued.

The problem that our team is focusing on involves the tendency for individuals to hold onto stocks that have lost money and sell stocks that have made money. This tendency has roots in the concepts of loss aversion and mental accounting. Small-time investors that own a stock with a price below what they paid for it are more willing to hold on to it because of a belief that the loss is not real until they pull their money out. There currently are tools that many investment companies have created to help investors understand when it makes the most sense to pull their money from a stock, but because of the placement of these tools and people’s willingness to trust their own mental accounts, many of these tools go unused.

Our team will be updating the interface that individual investors see when they open up their stock portfolios to target their mental accounting and loss aversion biases. Our new interface will emphasize the current value of the stock as well as the stock/sector outlook based upon multiple reputable analyst predictions. These small changes will affect the mindset of the investors so that they view stocks based upon their current values rather than focusing on the value of the initial investment.
