I am going to analyse the opening title of the horror/thriller film The Purge, and is about a family trying to survive the night of The Purge, which is where every crime other than nuclear crime is legalised for 12 hours.

In the first scene we are shown apparent video footage of a someone getting shot. This is from the first Purge in the USA. The footage seems to be taken from a CCTV camera as it is quite blurry and it has some information at the top right such as the date and time of when it was filmed, where it was taken and what it is up for. This gives a sense of realism and makes the viewer more engaged, as they are wondering whether it is real or not. From research I have found out that some of the footage used in the opening title is actual footage, however it doesn't say which. This further promotes the point of mystery, which is real and which isn't. There are a lot of different MeS used in the trailer, such as the constant use of CCTV footage, the weapons used, the setting that it is taken in and the clothing that they are wearing. The weapons used are nothing unordinary for the USA and they are all quite realistic, such as using small guns and baseball bats and knives. This can make the viewer uncomfortable as it is something that can happen to anyone, as it is not hard to acquire these things and anyone can get the majority of these, so it is quite scary. The locations are very interesting, as a lot of them are in alleyways or very secluded areas as if they don't want to be seen, but then there is a major juxtaposition as in the next scene there is a shootout in the middle of the street so it again fortifies the point of nowhere is safe, which I think is the type of message they are going. This is also giving a clear indication of the characters that we are going to be dealing with, as they are dressed as normal everyday people, and most likely are, however when they are free to do whatever they please then they turn into monsters. This could connote that anyone is a danger to you, and you cannot trust anyone, as when they are free to do whatever they want without repercussions and consequences then people can change, and so it can put you on edge and make you nervous as you may feel alone, without being alone.

Next, I am going to be analysing the sub-genre of the film and how I know that it is a horror/thriller based on the Mise-en-Scene.

In the scene shown below, It denotes a building on fire with various people around it and again is seen through CCTV. However, this one seems to be in an entirely different state, in Oregon. This connotes that The Purge is national and is the normal thing to do and people are living with. Both the screenshots displayed help to convey the sub genre which is horror. When people think of horror, the large majority of people will think of the paranormal and monsters, however the Purge goes against this and is psychological in a way. I can tell it is a horror because once the Purge starts, for those 12 hours you are alone, and you cannot trust anyone other than your immediate family. Everyone you know, friends and family, could turn into murderers that night and you have no idea who is coming for you or who isn't, and it can make you very paranoid. It also embeds the fear of the unknown, as you never know what is going to happen that night, and it is every persons nightmare to have their family in danger, so the film heavily feeds off of that to help make the movie successful. The film is also classed as a horror as it is quite shocking. It portrays everyday ordinary people murdering each other, and that is not seen ever. They are always seen as insane of mental, however the people in this film are all perfectly sane which also further enforces the idea of paranoia.

Finally, I am going to be analysing is the narrative of the film, and how I can in a way guess what is going to happen due to it being a horror.

It is quite simple to guess what type of story you are going to be dealing with, when it is a thriller/horror movie involving a family. You can be very sure that you are going to witness a shocking event, possibly multiple due to the nature of the how family horror/thrillers are. Without spoiling anything, there are a couple of things that you can expect to happen in a film that is relatively similar to The Purge since they almost always include a shocking scene or two. A main character is going to be heavily injured or even be killed, the villain is going to be victorious just as much as the heroes etc. the list goes on, these are just a few. The lighting that you can see is very dark and gloomy, as this connotes evil and sadness which is very prominent in horrors and so you can definitely expect to see heavy violence, just from watching the opening title, as there are a lot of morbid scenes before the movie even starts, which is very unusual as the opening title usually tries to lead to some sort of peak or something that will invoke mystery and fear into the viewer, however The Purge has taken the approach of being shocking straight away, possibly warning the viewer of what is to come. The colours are also very dark, other than the fires that are being shown on CCTV, however it still signifies destruction and chaos which can make people very nervous and paranoid. The Auteur, James DeMonaco, is widely known for The Purge films, and so is known to direct and write very morbid movies that play on the viewers minds and being unable to protect, which are very big in all of The Purge films, especially so in the original. Whenever you see a film directed and written by DeMonaco, you can expect to see a morbid narrative with shocking twists.
