         <description><![CDATA[<p>Walt Whitman spent his childhood in New York, where he was first employed at age 12 as a printer. He later held jobs as a newspaper editor and a schoolteacher. During this time he began publishing poems in popular magazines. After some time, the first edition of Leaves of Grass was printed in 1855. This was a poetry collection that Whitman spent most of his professional life writing.</p>]]></description>

Some famous poems by him are <em>O Captain! My Captain!, Song of Myself, I Hear America Singing, </em>and <em>A Noiseless Patient Spider. </em>During his visits to military hospitals during the civil war, he cared to thousands of soldiers, and provided emotional support towards them. Walt Whitman originally went to Washington in 1863 in search for his brother but stayed throughout the war. One interesting fact about Walt Whitman was that he suffered a stroke in 1873 that left him partially paralyzed. </p>]]></description>

Other poetry, Walt had Carter’s including printing, teaching, reporting, and editing. During the civil war, Walt Whitman helped, caring for wounded soldiers, and providing comfort and support by being a company to talk to.
