         <description><![CDATA[<p>Students generated hopes for</p><p>this project and norms of how to</p><p>treat each other. Students</p><p>identified fears they had related</p><p>to our project. This will serve as</p><p>our group's social contact. Some</p><p>of the hopes included: reduce</p><p>carbon footprint by 5% and make</p><p>a difference to save the planet. We took our first picture as</p><p>Kindness Counters last week! We</p><p>are missing 5 students out of 15</p><p>total in this picture. They are a</p><p>great group of students.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>After a week of student observations, students worked together to generate a list of things that “bug” them at Lakeside regarding the carbon footprint. Students considered different areas within the school setting. Students participated</p><p>in a rip, slap, pass protocol for the purpose of creating questions to ask staff and students. Below are some of examples</p><p>of the questions: </p><ul><li><p>Are you leaving projectors on when you are gone?</p></li><li><p>Why do we leave the lights on?</p></li><li><p>Do you walk to school?</p></li><li><p>Do you leave your electronics on when you are not there?</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Our group engaged in an interview</p><p>protocol, which encouraged the</p><p>Kindness Counters to ask staff and</p><p>students questions about the</p><p>Lakeside carbon footprint. These</p><p>interviews helped us understand</p><p>different perspectives and uncover</p><p>more information.</p><p><br/></p><p>After interviewing staff and students, our group reconvened and took turns sharing their findings through engaging in a talking chip protocol. This protocol allows everyone the opportunity to talk in the group and have their voice be heard. The following were some findings that</p><p>students gained through the interviews:</p><ul><li><p>Recycling has been an ongoing effort</p></li><li><p>Bring back the “Green Team”</p></li><li><p>Most people (7) drive to work while some walk to work (3)</p></li><li><p>Create recycling posters to spread awareness</p></li><li><p>On average, 3 hours a day are spent on laptops</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>During our committee meetings, students earn "teamwork tickets" for attending weekly meetings and for being a teammate/ leader. There is a ticket drawing at the end of each month for a special prize! This week's winner was June!</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Our group engaged in a gallery walk protocol, which allowed students to review previous protocols/activities we have done in the past couple months. Students were encouraged to write down 2-3 things that were most important to them while keeping the driving question in mind: How can students at Lakeside Elementary reduce Lakeside’s carbon footprint?</p><p><br></p><p>After the gallery walk, students were given 10 minutes to write down as many ideas as possible to solve the driving question. Students wrote down one idea for each sticky note. When they were done, they added their notes to the poster; <strong>239 ideas were generated!</strong></p>]]></description>

The purpose of this protocol was to evaluate whether our solutions/ideas are new, useful, and/or feasible. We reviewed the following solutions/ideas:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Technology</strong>: Use computers less</p></li><li><p><strong>Technology</strong>: automatic lights</p></li><li><p><strong>Less waste</strong>: donate books instead of buying new ones</p></li><li><p><strong>Green team/paper gator</strong>: re-establish the green team</p><p><br></p></li></ul><p>Each student received a NUF test rubric and students provided a NUF rating (1-10) for each solution ( = you strongly disagree; 10 = you strongly agree). </p><ul><li><p>(156) - <strong>Technology</strong>: Use computers less</p></li><li><p>(182.5) - <strong>Technology</strong>: automatic lights</p></li><li><p>(197) - <strong>Less waste</strong>: donate books instead of buying new ones</p></li><li><p>(185.5) - <strong>Green team/paper gator</strong>: re-establish the green team</p></li></ul><p><br></p><p>During our next meeting, the Kindness Counters will start finalizing project details for the public product.</p>]]></description>
