The precursor to the Sugar Act of 1764 was the Molasses Act of 1733 which put a six pence per gallon tax on molasses but it was often evaded by the colonists who just smuggled the goods. The Sugar Act would serve as a continuation of the Molasses Act by lowering the tax slightly but enforcing it more as to prevent smuggling.
