In the article Youth Violence: What We Know and What We Need to Know, the authors discuss risk factors, both environmental and biological, as well as possible steps to prevent youth rampage shootings. For their research, they set the parameters of youth at ages 10 to 24 but mostly focused on the age of 15 – 24. The reason for the narrowing of the ages was the statistics that state that that youth age group commits more violent crime than the others. To further manage the data, they broke gun violence committed by youths into two separate categories, school rampage shootings, and street shootings. Overall , the studies show school shootings are by far rarer than youth urban shootings. The cause is not simple but contributing factors include family life, biomedical causes and social factors. They hypothesize theories for future research to help prevent gun violence in American youth.

The study by Thomson (2022) goes into the prevalence and correlation of gun violence among female offenders. It examines how psychopathy traits, specifically the interpersonal, affective and behavioral, relate to different forms of violence, including gun violence. Scholars have started to pay more attention to the intersection between other personality traits such as psychopathic and aggressive, especially in women. For example, Thomson (2020) has reported on how female psychopathy features are relevant to their violent crimes, particularly in the aspect of their drug-related crimes. This provides a timely opportunity to examine how psychopathy manifests in female aggression. Another study of relevance is by Thomson and colleagues (2019b) about the sex difference in psychopathy and its association with aggression. They showed that psychopathic traits predict physical, verbal and indirect aggression in men and women differently. Hence, one can speculate about different aggressive outcomes for psychopathy for men and women. Articles on the research with behavioral and neuroimaging methods pointed towards possibly different outcomes for women compared to men when it comes to psychopathy. Another paper in this research, by Roy and colleagues (2021), covered an association between psychopathy and prejudiced attitudes, finding that those high in psychopathic traits tend to show support for social dominance and authoritarianism, which is in turn associated with aggressive behavior. Mosselman and colleagues (2018) also studied psychopathy. They studied robberies using videos and focused on weapon use and related body language used to assert power. Although they did not explicitly study women, their findings remain relevant as they help understand the underlying mechanisms of body language that leads to aggression and dominance in criminals of all kinds. Understanding psychopathy and its association with aggression, especially in women. can help understand and prevent it.
