I started reading BOB books at an early age. I remember learning how to read quickly and being annoyed that these weren't longer. However, I owe my ability to read earlier than most children my age to these tiny books. They were simple books where the words all sounded similar. If you were able to figure out one word, most likely you could figure out the rest of the book.

My parents read to me before bed almost every night. They started being short books that we would start and finish in one sitting. Soon after, the books began to get longer and I started reading them to myself more than I had them read to me. I remember this being one of my favorite series to have read to me as a child. I found myself loving books that I could relate too. I did a lot of dancing when I was younger so I really enjoyed Angelina Ballerina.

When I was still young, I found myself being drawn to fairy tails which eventually led me to more romantic-type novels. This was one of my favorite books. I enjoyed the mystery behind it as well as it was not your typical "prince and princess book" but rather a book about a common boy solving a big mystery and ending up falling in love at the end.

The reading class struggle

Because I was reading chapter books way before my time, they put me in an advance reading class. However, I was not good at homework or doing the reading that they wanted me to do. I did not like the books picked out and was not motivated to read them on my own time. Eventually, I was moved down to a regular class. It gets me thinking to this day, was my ability to take directions more important than my skill and love of reading? Back then, I was reading Nancy Drew while other children were still reading picture books. But because I didn't like reading what they told me to read, I was put in a regular class.

I found myself just admiring mysteries in general. I loved Nancy Drew books but also enjoyed reading more medieval ones like The Lady Grace Mysteries. I was drawn to a strong female role that portrayed grace, wit, and class. It was interesting to me that both Grace and Nancy were both on the younger side but showed a lot of maturity and intelligence.

Older style

When I was in elementary school, I found myself really enjoying older books that my teachers had in the classroom. Most of my peers were reading more modern and new books. Although I did not think much of it, I was actually picked on by the types of books I chose to read. It is so odd that kids would use something small like that to be the source of bullying on another student. However, I didn't care and still read the books I read. I remember liking The Baby-Sitters Club when I was younger a lot.

From late middle school to college, I found myself really liking Sophie Kinsella books. I really enjoyed the lightheartedness that came with all her books. They were always so funny and the main characters were relatable and fabulous. They always had a little bit of a romantic edge to it. I still find myself liking these kinds of books to this day, however, I am not reading as often as I used too. I find myself so busy in college it is hard just to sit down and read a book for fun. I hope to get back into reading for myself more this year.
