Jesus’ Incarnation

This is the first part of Jesus’ life, when he assumed human nature. He did this to enter earth and bring salvation to humanity. This happened because God wanted to send Jesus on a mission so he could save the world. When Jesus became human, we have to remember that he was fully human and fully divine. Well, almost fully human. Jesus was human in every aspect besides sin. This is the most important event of Jesus’ life, because this is how he was able to be alive on earth. He came to us to help us achieve salvation, and this is earliest sign of how willing Jesus is to give everything up for us.

Jesus’ Birth

Jesus was born in a manger in the town of Bethlehem. Jesus’ mother is Mary, and an angel came to her to ask her if she would be the mother of him. Jesus’ hometown was Nazareth, and is was very small and not easy to get to. It was kind of isolated from everything else. The first at people to visit baby Jesus were the shepherds. An angel came to them and told them that the Savior had been born. They rushed over to Bethlehem and yes, they found Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus. This shows who Jesus came to save because the shepherds believed. They could have said the angel was lying, and then they wouldn’t have visited Jesus. But they believed, and their faith led them far.

The Call

Baptism by John the Baptist
Jesus came to the Jordan River to get baptized by Jesus. When he arrived, John was confused. He was wondering why Jesus would pick him to baptize him. Anyways, John agreed to baptize him and as he did, the Spirit of God descended from heaven and said “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” This proved to everyone there that Jesus was the son of God. I think the significance of this event was that everyone there believed and wanted to be free from sin, so God made it known to them that he was real so that they could continue to believe.

Wedding at Cana
At the wedding at Cana, Jesus turned water into wine. The disciples went to draw water, and once they had, they brought it to master of the feast. Magically, it had turned to wine. I think the significance of this is that Jesus showed the disciples that he is willing to perform miracles for the good of the community/others instead of himself.

Call of the Disciples
When Jesus called the disciples, he was on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. He called to Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Right away, they left whatever they were doing to follow God. The significance of this is that Jesus’ disciples were so devoted to him and were willing to do anything for him, and that is want God wants for us. He wants us to be willing to do good things.

One of Jesus’ teachings is that you should love God with all of your heart. He says that you should love God above all things. We can take away from this teaching that God created us, and whatever you do, it will reflect on God as well. No matter what decisions you make, God will know. This teaching can help us lead a life of justice and truth because before we make a decision, we should remember that we love God very much, and he loves us back. Because of reminding ourselves, it might help us make the right decision.

Miracles

I chose the miracle of the woman with the hemorrhage. In this story, Jesus is walking through the crowds. One woman, who had been bleeding for 12 years and no one could heal her, touched his cloak. Almost immediately, she stopped bleeding. Jesus was a little bit angry, and turned around asking who had touched him. No one came forward, and he said that he knew someone had touched him because he felt the power leave him. Finally, the woman came forward. Jesus forgave her and told her that her faith had saved her. This miracle that Jesus performed shows us that even without trying, Jesus could do great things for people. He wasn’t even aware that the woman was going to touch him, but he healed her. Jesus performed miracles to give back to the people that believed in him, and he also did it to show that he was the son of God.

Parables

I chose the parable of the Good Samaritan. (Luke 10:25-37) A man asked who his neighbors was when Jesus says “Love thy neighbor as you love yourself.” Jesus started talking about a man that got robbed and was left on the side of the road. Two people walked past him before a Samaritan passed him. This man fixed his wounds, and took him on his donkey to an inn. Then Jesus proceeded to ask the man who was the neighbor to the man left to die. He responded with the Samaritan, and Jesus told him to go act the same way to others. This parable teaches us that we should always put others before us, and we should always be willing to help people. It also tells us that God wants us to all live in harmony and care for each other.

Arrest/Death

Before Jesus dies, he gathers his disciples together for one final meal, called the Last Supper. At the last supper, Jesus broke bread and told them to eat it in memory of him. He did the same thing with wine. He did this so that the disciples would remember him, because he knew he was going to die soon. This is how the sacrament of Eucharist came about. We eat bread and drink wine in church to remember Jesus and him last supper. On the surface, Jesus was arrested for lying. Authorities accused him for lying about being the King of the Jews. The real, underlying reason why Jesus got arrested and crucified was because his teachings were starting to threaten the social traditions that had been around for thousands of years. Catholics believe that Judas and Pontius Pilate are to blame for Jesus’ death and arrest. This is because Judas betrayed Jesus and gave him up to the authorities, and Pilate sentenced Jesus to death even though he thought he was innocent.

Resurrection and Ascencion

Jesus’ resurrection happened three days after the stone was rolled in front of his tomb. The first person to see the risen Jesus was Mary Magdalene. When she saw Jesus, he told her to go spread the word that he had risen. A couple of days after Jesus’ resurrection, he appeared to the apostles. First, he appeared to two disciples when they were on their way to a town 7 miles from Jerusalem. They didn’t even notice that it was Jesus that they were walking and talking with until they sat down and had dinner with him. The second time, Jesus appeared to all of his disciples, besides one, Thomas. When Thomas got back and heard that Jesus appeared, he told the rest of the disciples that he wouldn't believe them till he saw Jesus for himself. A few weeks later, Jesus showed up in front of all the disciples, including Thomas. Jesus told him to touch his hands where he was nailed, and he was in fact real. Throughout Jesus’ appearances, he tells his disciples to spread the word that he has risen, to forgive people of their sins, and to notice the people who believe in Jesus without seeing him.
