Doyle supports his illustration through comparing and contrasting the hearts of multiple living organisms, including the hummingbird, blue whales, and tortoises, exemplifying the magnitude of the beating heart and how one should value their life, as well as describing the hummingbird and its life, emphasizing how the hummingbird's short lived life is lived with no regret. His purpose is to highlight the significance and value of the heart in one's life as well as making his audience experience human life through written words in order to ensure that humans do not live their lives without acknowledging the value of life and both the positive and negative aspects of life. He uses logos when comparing the size of the different organism's heart. For example he uses logos to exemplify the size of the whale heart which "weighs more than seven tons." He uses this technique to provide us with a measurement so we can fully understand the difference of the sizes of hearts. In his article he uses ethos to inform the readers about the history of the hummingbird when describing "Joyas Voladoras,  flying jewels, the first white explorers in the Americas called them." This background information illustrates to Doyle's credibility about the topic itself.  Doyle also uses pathos in his essay, "We are utterly open with no one in the end—not mother and father, not wife or husband, not lover, not child, not friend" to evoke the emotion of loneliness. Moreover, Doyle stresses how the hummingbird lives its  life, demonstrating that the heart is a significant part of life, and it should be valued.  "A hummingbird’s heart beats ten times a second. A hummingbird’s heart is the size of a pencil eraser. A hummingbird’s heart is a lot of the hummingbird". 

Metaphor- The author compares the heartbeats of the tortoise and the hummingbird in order to emphasize that there are many different ways to live life as well as to highlight that the heart itself has great significance in life. "Every creature on earth has approximately two billion heartbeats to spend in a lifetime. You can spend them slowly, like a tortoise and live to be two hundred years old, or you can spend them fast, like a hummingbird, and live to be two years old." This quote conveys the idea that although there are multiple ways to spend the heartbeats given to a person in their lifetime, one will be alone once those heartbeats are over, portraying that the heart is the most valued part of one's life. 

Imagery- Doyle uses imagery throughout the piece of literature in order to assist the audience in vividly seeing the great importance of the heart in life within many different living organisms. He conveys his ideas and message through imagery, making his audience see what he sees. Through imagery, Doyle is able to signify the heart within a life, and is able to make the reader acknowledge that although the heart is not the largest in size, it determines most of what does and what does not occur in one's life. "A child could walk around in it, head high, bending only to step through the valves". This clear description and vivid depiction of how a child could walk through the heart of a blue whale highlights how although even the biggest heart in the world is not significant in size, the heart determines a great deal of a person's life and it should be appreciated, as one's heartbeat is not eternal.

Anaphora- Doyle uses the repetition of "A hummingbird's heart" in the beginning of his essay in order to highlight and accentuate how much of the hummingbird its heart makes up. In turn, this adds to Doyle's purpose of attempting to prove how much of one's life their heart makes up. Because of this repeated phrase, Doyle is able to emphasize how the hummingbird values its life, although short lived, and that humans should do the same. "A hummingbird’s heart beats ten times a second. A hummingbird’s heart is the size of a pencil eraser. A hummingbird’s heart is a lot of the hummingbird." 

Simile- The author compares the valves of a blue whale's heart to the doors of a saloon. This is to portray their constant function, swinging open and close, constantly letting people in and out, just as how a heart constantly lets blood in and out in order to let organisms live. Doyle uses this comparison to highlight how the valves of the heart are constantly at work, keeping the blue whale alive.
