092-Advocating for Students and Ed Tech by Chris Cocek

Have you ever written a grant application before? If so, give some brief details including if you were successful.
Now think of your classroom, is there a particular student or group of students that needs to be advocated for? Perhaps there is an initiative you need to advocate resources for.
What is one piece of educational technology that you would like to receive if you were to write a grant proposal?

I have written an application for the Autism Grant (through student services) for the last two years. I was successful in receiving the grant both years. They were very clear that you would only be considered if you requested items from the provided list and followed all directions exactly as listed.

My LC partner and I were planning on applying for the PDAF grant this year but didn’t end up getting around to it. We had hoped to create a Snoezelen type sensory room for our learning centre as we have many students who would strongly benefit from a calming environment.

If I were to write a grant proposal for one piece of educational technology I would ask for an overhead projector for my LC as we have been waiting since September to get one! This is an issue I never thought I would have as they are essential in today's classrooms!

I found a literature review on ed tech for students with disabilities in low and middle income countries that I think has broader implications to our educational contexts here in Canada. There's a noted gap in the research on how and which technology could be the most useful, but reiterates that teachers are instrumental in incorporating tech and demonstrating initiative.

Although this lit review is more about the theory and practice itself rather than specific types of ed tech, I think it's a great reminder of our why and the importance of advocating for students and writing grants when we can to fill voids in the system.

I have found that there is not a great deal of conversation around how to write one but all of these resources being posted are a great resource!

When I think about my classroom, a group that needs advocating for is my EAL students, particularly the ones who have moved past EAL support but still require some additional support. I think having an ed tech resource available for them to support their reading and writing success would be really beneficial for them. I am not sure what that item would be but I would hope something that can support a wide variety of EAL students at varying stages of their learning journey.

I think the unpredictability of my schedule/classroom situation each year has really limited my desire to attain a lot of 'stuff' or things, as I never know what I will end up with from year to year.

Last year I joined on with the grade 5 Leadership in my school and have starting thinking about opportunities that a grant might be applicable for some of the roles these students take on. This year we were hoping to work on producing a year book for the school, but that didn't work out as planned. I would like to continue to think on that and access some cameras to allow students to take charge of that project.

Yes, I’ve written grants before. One that stands out is the Indigo Love of Reading Grant, which I was able to use to build up our classroom library with a wide range of books. I also wrote an Autism Grant for the Learning Center, which helped create a better space for students with autism, with things like sensory tools and other resources. Both grants were successful!

When it comes to advocating for my students, I see a real need for more resources for those in the Learning Center, especially students who face learning challenges. If I were to write another grant, I’d focus on getting personal iPads or Chromebooks for these students. Having access to these devices would help them with personalized learning apps and make it easier for them to engage in lessons at their own pace. It would be a game-changer in helping them become more independent and better supported in their learning.

I have written quite a few grants in the past few years. I am constantly on the hunt for new grants, specifically technology grants. I have applied for the Best Buy Grant, PDAF, Brilliant Labs (NB and NS) and Healthy Schools Grant. With my PDAF grant I received a new green screen for my classroom and materials for a STEAM around inclusion and accessibility. I was surprised how straightforward it was (especially with the help of AI!). The one downfall with the PDAF grants is that there is a lot of money to apply for but funds must be spent out of pocket.

In my classroom specifically, iPads are always super helpful for my EAL students for the variety of apps they provide and taking pictures through Google translate. I am currently using one of my own and one the school was able to provide me with 8 EAL students in my class.

One piece of educational technology I would like for my classroom are Makey Makeys and a Cricut. Both allow for students to be more creative in how they show me what they know or have learned.

First of all, I am reading all of your responses. You are all incredible and I have to be honest, I have never written a grant proposal. I have applied for conference grants for PD, I guess. All in all, I have never applied for anything for the classroom. Wait, I did apply for Cash for Classrooms for various things and used the Cole Harbour Foundation. However, all of the above options did not require much writing.

I am excited to actually do a grant proposal as part of class in order to do it. I find that I get turned off quite easily when the writing gets intense. Additionally, I have worked most of my career where I had access to technology or funds within my school.

Currently, in my school, I want a set of chromebooks or ipads that are located in my room. For my courses, there is a lot of research and want to stop fighting over the chromebooks with other teachers. Our chromebooks are failing and there doesn't seem to be replacements readily. Our tech guy is working on it. In my last school, I had my own tech tubs and loved it!!! I would do anything not to feel like the chrome cart hog. This would make my life easier, especially as I have a lot of students with tech as part of their adaptations. They need it for writing and I pride myself on inclusion and creating great accessible resources for them.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for their wonderful resources that they posted here. It makes the omnious task more accessible to me!

Katy

I have written grant applications for scholarships before (I guess these would be more like a burasry), and have been successful in that twice in my undergrad and twice in my B.Ed. As a new teacher, I have never made a grant application in this context, I didn't even know this was something we could do! I will defintely reading through everyones posts and looking more into how/where/when I can do this.

Like lots of us here, iPads are one of the only ways I can successfully communicate with my EAL students. Last year, I had 4 EAL kids, all different languages (Russian, Korean, Mandarin, Turkish). They each had an iPad and it became so time consuming to translate everything into 4 languages after/during a lesson. My math coach gave me the brilliant idea to use the Microsoft Translate app (instead of Google Translate) because it had a better interface for picking up what I was saying via the iPad's mic and instantly translate for them. We ran into the issue of the iPads picking up other voices/noises so the translations weren't really accurate. My math coach lent me a pair of her airpods, so I would connect my air pods to my iPhone, create a group chat on Microsoft Translate and invite my 4 EAL boys, they would join from their iPads and since I had the airpods in, the mic was picking up from the headphones, so it was only picking up the words I was saying and directly translating it for the boys in the group, in their respective languages. This was a game changer for us!

I would love to get a grant for the same type of thing, even though my EAL primaries can't really read their own language yet, I know that microsoft translate can also speak translations aloud which would be really helpful. I would also love to get a 3D printer. Jeff Hennigar printed out a ton of math manipulative for me (pattern blocks, dice, counters, etc) and his students got to do the coding (?) for it.

This isn't exactly on topic but I think it's a beautiful talk about learning "it's not about making learning happen, its about letting it happen" - and the story in the beginning about the kids and the computer is sweet/relevant :)

I’ve never written a grant application before, but I’ve been thinking about what my students could really use. Many of them don’t have educational materials at home, so a grant that would provide items like books, counting tools, or games to send home with them would be a huge help. It’s something that would allow them to continue learning even outside of the classroom. Additionally, I’d love to receive a grant for something like Sphero Indi or BeeBot mats. I’m learning how hands-on technology can be used to engage students in various subjects, and I think it would be a fantastic way to keep them excited and involved in their learning.

As a new teacher, this padlet board is so helpful! I have never written a grant application before and wouldn't know where to start but have been interested in it - so all these posts are awesome and give me a great starting point. I find there are so many resources and opportunities available but it seems like I don't hear about them until after the fact (mostly because I don't know where to look), so I think it's awesome we're talking about this.

In terms of resources needed, I think a class set of Chromebooks would be amazing. There are a few students in my room, who struggle particularly with reading and writing, and having these available to them would be awesome for them.

Also, I would love to get a class set of mini microphones so students could record and share their storytelling, class work, et. with peers and family!
