Although I’ve taken conducting 1 I am still a bit nervous about rehearsal pacing. I also can improve on general conducting stuff.

💛 If I were put in a junior high room tomorrow, I’d probably pull out Randall Standridge or Brian Balmages but would definitely need to start learning more rep for younger and immediate age groups

💚 If I had a plan, I think I would be able to communicate it fairly efficiently on the board. I’m pretty organized and usually keep track of dates/times/plans well.

Although I understand the fundamental principles of conducting/pacing, I don’t have a lot of experience in that field and lack comprehensive knowledge of how to piece different pieces of music or musical concepts together.

I am just nervous on the podium and in front of a group and tend to forget or not notice things that I would normally be able to point out because of this. Conducting I think for the most part is fine but the actual thought of running a rehearsal puts me on edge.

💛 Put me in front of woodwinds and I’ll be golden. I’d be pretty solid with brass, and not great with percussion

I feel good about knowing each instrument at a 6th grade level. I need some work on all the percussion instruments and how to teach those.

I feel confident that I understand most, if not all percussion instruments at a basic level, but could not assist a struggling student with nuances or percussion terminology.

💛 I’ve taken Conducting I and feel relatively confident about my technique, and I served as a section leader for a couple years, but I struggle with rehearsing a full ensemble (as opposed to one section). It’s hard to listen to everyone at once and stay focused.

I think I would be able to do relatively fine in front of most instruments when it comes to pedagogy especially for percussion, but for the other wind and string instruments there are a few things that I may not be able to properly answer or fix during a rehearsal and I’d like to be able to.

I am honestly pretty unfamiliar with music scores, especially with beginner or high school ensembles. I would like to learn about more pieces for sure.

I do not know enough about what students should typically play in a junior high band and I have no clue where to start looking or how to know if what I choose is too hard or not.

I think this is one of the things I am the most unfamiliar with. I have observed a few times so i’ve seen some examples but I don’t know how to get the attention of a class full of children.

💛 I know how to organize a classroom, but I have not decided what chair system I want to use yet. My high school did not do chair tests, so I do not know if that’s something I want to employ in my classroom or not.

This is an area where I feel fairly confident in my ability to run a classroom. I do think I have the ability to manage the chairs and relationships of students fairly well and I feel that this is an area where I would do better than some of the others.

I do think I can communicate very well and I know that I can advocate and communicate clearly to a school and hopefully get what is needed for my students to succeed.
