Apparently, he saw Athena bathing, which caused him to be blind. Athena felt sorry for him, because she couldn't restore his blindness,  so she granted him with prophecy. From this power that Athena granted him, he was able to understand birds. Another theory is that Teiresias came across mating snakes and killed the female, turning him into a woman. Years later, he stumbled upon two mating snakes again. He killed the male snake this time, turning him back into a man. Because he had lived in both genders, Zeus and Hera asked which one he enjoyed being more. He said that he enjoyed being male more, agreeing with Zeus, so Hera afflicted him with blindness.
