"The only thing that kept her going was the image of the refreshing shower ahead of her, but unfortunately she was never able to enjoy it, because the drops that fell from the shower never made it to her body: they evaporated before they reacher her. Her body was giving off so much heat that the wooden walls began to split and burst into flame. Terrified, she thought she would be burnt to death, and she ran out of the little enclosure just as she was, completely naked." (Page 51)
- visual imagery is used here to help emphasise the effect the meal had on Getrudis, not just mentally but physically
- shower scene is also significant as one usually takes their time to think during them about life related topics
- "walls splitting" could be a metaphor for Gertrudis's mental walls and how they were being broken down and this then in turn also did lead to some of the fear that she felt because she was unsure of how to deal with this
- "ran out of the little enclosure", could be a continuation of the metaphor as she was finally stepping out of her comfort zone and into a harsher more concrete reality
- "completely naked", we enter the world like this and for Gertrudis after her walls had been broken down it felt as if she was being reborn again with a clear mind that had not been tainted by her mother or anybody else"

"Gertrudis stopped running when she saw him riding towards her. Naked as she was, with her loosened hair falling to her waist, luminous, glowing with energy, she might have been an angel and devil in one woman. The delicacy of her face, the perfection of her pure virginal body contrasted with the passion, the lust, that leapt from her eyes, from her every pore. These things, and the sexual desire Juan had contained for so long while he was fighting in the mountains, made for a spectacular encounter." (Page 52)
- visual imagery
- use of words such as "angel" and "devil" is creating a contrast showing how she may have appeared to one, looking like as innocent as an angel but her thoughts at the moment weren't as innocent as she looked
- use of adjectives helps to create the atmosphere for this scene to really build up the emotions Gertrudis feels
- use of the word "pure" adds onto the point of just how naked she is
- her being naked shows how liberated she feels as her being naked is symbolic itself
- shows how free, innocent and how uncluttered her mind is as she is finally seeing things for what they are

"He couldn't get the image of Gertrudis out of his mind, Gertrudis running through the field - completely naked. He must have been hypnotised by her ample breasts swinging from side to side." (Page 53)
- visual imagery
- the way she is completely and utterly naked shows how her character also has nothing to hide and that she is laying everything in the open for the reader's to see
- shows his sexual desire but not necessarily for Gertrudis but rather for Tita as his next thoughts talk about how he imagines hers to look and how they must be sisters for a reason

"With a deep breath, she took hold of the first one and twisted its neck, as she had seen Nacha do so often, but she used too little force to kill the poor quail, which went running pitifully around the kitchen, its head hanging to one side. She was horrified! She realised that you can't be weak when it comes to killing: you have to be strong to it just causes more sorrow. It occurred to her that she could use her mother's strength right now." (Page 47)
- morbid imagery used to show how cruel her mother was and sometimes how cruel she herself had to be in order to cause less suffering in the long run
- imagery portrays mama's character to be very strong and unsympathetic which builds up in the story

"As she chewed each match she pressed her eyes shut and tried to reproduce the most moving memories of her and Pedro. The first time she saw him . the first time their hands touched, the first bouquet of roses, the first kiss, the first caress, the first time they made love. In this she was successful; when the match she chewed made contact with the luminous image she evoked, the match began to burn. Little by little her vision began to brighten until the tunnel again appeared before her eyes. There at its entrance was the luminous figure of Pedro waiting for her. Tita did not hesitate. She let herself go to the encounter, and they wrapped each other in a long embrace; again experiencing an amorous climax, they left together for the lost Eden. Never again would they be apart." (Page 221)
- visual imagery, helps show John's theory but puts it into context within the storyline
- repetition, "first time" and how these first moments were the most important experiences in their relationship
- sexual references
- reflects on the story of these two lovers and all the secret moments they had shared together

"The dark room was transformed into an erupting volcano. It cast stone and ash in every direction. When the stones reached high enough, they exploded into multicoloured lights. From miles away, people in neighbouring towns watched the spectacle, thinking it was fireworks celebrating the wedding of Alex and Esperanza." (Page 221)
- comparison of room to an erupting volcano
- visual imagery showing how out of control the eruptions were
- hyperbole (maybe) to show how much their love towards one another had meant and just how strong and powerful it truly was and the maybe to also show how it was everlasting as the fire did not stop until people had come to investigate
- could also however show how destructive their love was as it burnt everything until there was nothing left but just ash
